Hello and welcome to the LIVE coverage of the Group F fixture, where Chile takes on Thailand at Roazhon Park in Rennes, France. I'm Lavanya . Today is a big day as far as confirmations of the last 16 are concerned. Cameroon beat New Zealand in a thrilling last-minute 2-1 victory in Montpellier. It's time now to see if Chile or Thailand plan to give us another stunner of a game.
LIVE UPDATES: The knockouts begin tomorrow and we will be around to bring you LIVE updates of the same. Make sure you join us for that too. For now, it's goodbye and goodnight. That ends the proceedings for the day from our end. Both Thailand and Chile's World Cups come to an end today, with Chile missing out on playing England in the round of 16 by just one goal. Both can take huge positives from this game though and the South American team come away from it having won its first ever game at the tournament.
The Super Falcons have heard the news. Are you surprised that they're celebrating the way they are?

If Chile doesn't go through, Nigeria will. Who will it be? We have one minute left.
Endler has come up and is asking for the ball to be passed to her. Can she do what her strikers are not able to?
Here's that missed penalty. Brutal.
80'URRUTIA DOUBLES CHILE'S LEAD! She times her run perfectly to stay onside and get on the end of Lopez's looping ball and she gets enough on the header to take it past Boonsing's outstretched hand and into the back of the net. 2-0 Chile! MAKE THAT ONE. Urrutia has netted one for the La Roja. Roughly 11 minutes remain. 2 goals to go.
FUN FACT: FIFA tells us that this is only the second time in Women's World Cup history that a nation's first goal in the tournament has been scored by a player from another country. Switzerland's first ever Women's World Cup goal was scored by an opponent - Ecuador's Angie Ponce in 2015. |
75' Chile is passing the ball well at the minute and staying patient, but they're still struggling to find a way into Thailand's box. CHILE needs two more and the energy has visibly faded. Under 20 minutes to go. Can we have two more from the Chilean side? 57' Saez is down in her box receiving some treatment at the minute after a collision with Endler. It looks like it was only an impact injury, but the medical team have taken her off the field to continue her treatment. Intamee has not let Chile rest in the other half. Good defense by Chile to block all efforts though. Can the La Rajo score two more? It's just funny that Chile's first ever goal in the World Cup has come from a Thai player. Talk about a global community. Boonsing has been a boon for Chile. [I am done, I promise.] 50' Chile has looked very confident since the start of the second half and is moving the ball around with pace. Zamora has another chance to run at Phetwiset down the right wing, but the defender does well to block her way into the box. 48' CHILE HAS ITS FIRST WORLD CUP GOAL! Zamora's cross picks out Aedo's run into the box and she takes the shot time. It fires back off the post, hits Boonsing and bounces across the line before the goalkeeper can react. 1-0 Chile! Group standings at half time:
Teams | Matches | Goals scored | Goal difference | Points |
USA | 3 | 17 | 17 | 9 |
Sweden | 3 | 7 | 5 | 6 |
Chile | 3 | -5 | 1 | |
Thailand | 3 | 1 | -17 | 1 |
At the same time, we have to commend Thailand on a job well done. They've held off a good but inconsistent Chilean attack for the first 45 minutes. Also, full marks to the girls for the lack of falls/injuries. Touch wood. We're waiting for the second half to begin, nervously worried about who is going to make it into the last 16. Dominic has abandoned us yesterday to head to the airport to meet a friend. After being unsure about the departure time for a while, he finally made it on time. I really hope Chile and Nigeria's fates are not going to go down to the wire this way. Desperately hoping for a few goals in the second half, and soon.
QUALIFICATION SCENARIOS Chile needs to win by 3 goals to go through. Thailand needs to win by 15 goals to go through. Nigeria needs this game to be a draw. If Chile doesn't manage a 3-goal margin or Thailand doesn't manage a 15-goal margin, Nigeria sails through. |
Manasi has just hopped over to tell me what I have missed from the USA game. Turns out not much. There's quite a bit of yawning on her end too. Star player Alex Morgan has missed chances, there's been the one solitary goal (which was incidentally the fastest goal of the tournament) and nothing else to catch one's eye happening in that tie.

The La Roja have had several opportunities today with two plum ones finding their way onto the post and crossbar. Bad luck there. Going by Endler's expressions, a few stern words will be spoken at halftime and rightly so. Chile comes into this game as the stronger side but has not behaved so

45'+2' BALMACEDA HITS THE CROSSBAR! Chile was struggling to find a way past Thailand's defence so Balmaceda decides to have a go from outside the box. It's curling towards the top corner, but it bounces off the crossbar much to the goalkeeper's relief. Chile looks slightly desperate at the minute as it goes for the opening goal in the game. Its passing is sloppy and it is giving away possession too easily under no pressure.
2 minutes added time. The frustration evident on Chilean faces with each passing minute. Thailand has done well to keep a clean sheet this half. No doubt, Thailand has put up a brilliant show here today but I can't tell if Chile is just being ordinary too. 40' GOOD SAVE BY ENDLER! Chile give the ball away sloppily and setsup a chance for Sung-Ngoen. She chips her shot down the middle ofthe goal and Endler jumps up to push the effort over the crossbarand the goalkeeper is not happy with her defenders for giving awaypossession. 38' INTAMEE COMES CLOSE! She did brilliantly to dribblepast Saez on the edge of the box to create more space for herselfbefore hitting her shot low to the bottom corner. Saez recoverswell though and gets enough contact on the ball to send it out fora corner. Chile is visibly getting a little nervous. It needs to calm down and look at this game with a clear head. 32' GOOD CHANCE FOR INTAMEE! It's Thailand's first chance of the game and Intamee takes a touch to get around her defender before curling her effort towards the bottom corner. Endler is quickly across her line to catch the shot. 30' Chile has dominated in possession so far in the first half, but it hasn't really been able to cause Boonsing too many problems with its long-range efforts.
28' GOOD CHANCE FOR ARAYA! She curls the free-kick around the wall and is aiming for the near post. It's at a comfortable height for the goalkeeper though and she makes the save.
You remember Dominic right? He was blogging Norway vs Korea the other night. He loves rooting for the underdogs and is rooting for Thailand. Even if that means hoping for a 15-0 victory margin. My sympathies are with Endler's Chile. Let's see if it manages something along the lines of Cameroon's victory from before. This is the longest Thailand has gone without letting the opponent score. Little victories. 17' ARAYA COMES CLOSE! Aedo squares the ball to Araya on the edge of the box and she takes a touch before hitting a long-range shot. She can't get it on target though and it rolls wide of the far post. 11' MISSED. OFF THE POST. So close for Chile. This would have been its first World Cup goal. Urrutia is not happy. Araya swings a cross into the box which Boonsing punches straight to Urrutia in the middle of the box. She fires her shot straight back at goal and Chinwong makes an important block to send the effort against the far post. It bounces back to Lara, but she can only send her effort over the crossbar. 9' Sung-Ngoen is the only player forward for Thailand and she's struggling to hold up the ball when she does receive it. Phancha picks her out with a throughball this time, but she's quickly closed down by Guerrero and Chile have possession back.
Since its 3-2 victory over Ivory Coast in the 2015 World Cup group stages, Thailand has lost each of its three matches in the competition, conceding 22 goals and scoring just one in those defeats. |
Nuengrutai Srathongvian makes just one change to the Thai side that lost to Sweden last time out and it's an enforced one. Taneekarn Dangda picked up her second booking of the tournament in that game, so is suspended today and Phetwiset comes in to replace her. Couple of changes in the Chilean side that's out to play today. Rocio Soto, Aedo and Lopez all come into the starting line-up, while Toro, Galaz and Claudia Soto drop down to the bench. I am missing the USA vs Sweden game because of this game that decides the fate of the knockouts. You don't have to though. My colleague Manasi is blogging the game LIVE and I hear USA has already scored. Lindsay Horan has begun proceedings there. The drum beats are out. It is quite the atmosphere here in Rennes
We began the night with two knockout spots and six teams. One has gone through, two have bowed out. We have three left to decide their destinies in this tournament. Who are you rooting for?
1' And we're underway. Nigeria, Chile and Thailand will hope for this game to go in its favour. A draw in this game will comfortably take Nigeria through. An emphatic victory for Chile (3-goal margin or higher) will take it through. Thailand has a towering requirement to scale. That -17 goal difference does not help its cause. Montpellier saw a brilliant game under an hour ago when Cameroon pulled off a victory no one saw coming. An last minute thriller from Ajara Nchouth took the girls in green through after an own-goal dented their confidence and knockout hopes, however briefly. Read all about it here.
Twelve teams go through this way leaving four spots open for the best third-place teams to occupy. China and Brazil are officially through after the former drew with Spain the other night and Marta helped the Selecao to a win over Italy. Cameroon beat New Zealand, thereby securing a spot in the knockouts. This also knocked out the Ferns and Argentina too from the running. Nigeria, Chile and Thailand now have one spot to fight for and this last game of the group stages will give us our answers when the final whistle blows.
Here's a look at the top two teams from every group who have reserved a place in the knockouts.
Group A | France and Norway |
Group B | Germany and Spain |
Group C | Italy and Australia |
Group D | England and Japan |
Group E | Canada and Netherlands |
Group F | USA and Sweden |
