Records galore in England's rout of Panama

A hat-trick from Harry Kane and brace from John Stones ensured that the match made some interesting records.

John Stones became only the seventh defender to score a brace in a World Cup match.

England thrashed first-timers Panama 6-1 and sealed its entry into the round-of-16. Hope among England supporters is rising and there are already whispers about "bringing the World Cup home" after a stellar performance by their team, albeit against Panama.

A hat-trick from Harry Kane ensured that the match also made few interesting records.

- This was England's biggest victory in World Cup history. Its previous biggest win was 3-0 against Poland, in 1986. The Three Lions had not managed four goals in a World Cup game since the 1966 final.

- Harry Kane's hat-trick was the third one by an English player in the history of the World Cup. Geoff Hurst's hat-trick in the 1966 final against West Germany was the first, followed by Gary Lineker's hat-trick against Poland in the group stage of 1986.

- Kane's second goal made him the first English player to score four goals in the group stage of a World Cup. Kane has five goals from his last five shots in the world cup.

- John Stones became the 7th defender to score a brace in a World Cup match, the first since Bartosz Bosacki with Poland against Costa Rica in 2006.

- It was only the fifth time in world cup history that a team scored five goals in the first half, the last time being Germany against Brazil in the semifinal of last year's World Cup.

-  Kane's first goal was the first time England converted a penalty in the World Cup since 2002, when David Beckham scored from the spot against Australia.

- England has named a unique starting XI in all 20 of Gareth Southgate's matches in charge.
