Mario Fernandes, who scored the equaliser to forced the penalty shootout, missed his spot-kick that effectively knocked Russia out of the tournament on penalties against Croatia.
Denis Cheryshev connected with the ball sweetly, from 25 yards out, getting the ball to curl in at Danijel Subasic's right post and leaving the Croatian goalkeeper stranded. This is not the first spectacular goal that Cheryshev has scored. Against Saudi Arabia in the first match of the tournament, he curled the ball in at the far post with the outside his left boot.
Andrej Kramaric equalised for Croatia, which had fallen behind to an astonishing goal from Denis Cheryshev. Kramaric connected sweetly with Mario Mandzukic's cross to beat Igor Akinfeev. His goal sent both teams level at half-time in the last quarterfinal of the World Cup.
The Russian players watch the Domagoj Vida's header nestle in the bottom corner, giving Croatia a lead for the first time on the night. Vida's extra-time header was, however, cancelled out by Mario Hernandes's header, also from a set-piece, in the second half of extra-time to force a penalty shootout.
Mario Fernandes (right) scores with a glancing header to level the score for the second time on the night, thereby forcing the last quarterfinal of the World Cup to a penalty shootout.
