I-League side NEROCA FC has threatened to shut down operations if the club is forced to play in the second division from the 2019-20 season onwards.

The status of the country's top division league, I-League, has become uncertain in recent times with the national federation (AIFF) reportedly set to elevate Indian Super League as the top tier league from next season.

The club's official Twitter handle tweeted on Monday, "After so much hard work and investment, we qualified for the top league (I-League) in 2017. Just after playing two seasons of it, we are put to play the second division once again. There is no other option than to shut down our beloved club."

However, NEROCA's CEO Naoba Thangjam wasn't available to confirm the development.

The Northeast club's statement comes on the back of Minerva Punjab's owner Ranjit Bajaj consideration to shut down the club claiming he was repeatedly let down by the AIFF.

NEROCA, Minerva and five other I-League clubs had pulled out of the ongoing Super Cup as a form of protest against the AIFF.

Two years ago, the club earned a maiden promotion into the I-League after winning the second division and finished second and sixth, respectively, in the two seasons.
