Aizawl relegated as Lajong, Mumbai clinch victories

Trevor Morgan's East Bengal side fell to a Isaac Vanmalsawma’s 61st minute goal that helped Shillong Lajong avoid relegation.

Trevor Morgan’s return as East Bengal’s coach was spoiled in Shillong’s Jawaharlal Nehru stadium as home side Lajong defeated the red and gold side 1-0. A win for Lajong against East Bengal meant Aizawl F.C. getting relegated to the second division of the I-League.

The home side needed a win to survive in the league and Isaac Vanmalsawma’s 61st minute goal helped the north-east side avoid relegation. In the first half, Lajong’s Fabio Pena had couple of chances to score but failed to convert any. There were a couple of chances for East Bengal as well, especially, when Lajong’s goalkeeper Kunzong Bhutia was unable to collect the ball off Dika’s free-kick in the 15th minute.

East Bengal finished the season in third, whereas Lajong ended in sixth on the table with 18 points.
