Ill-tempered Super Cup match sees six reds at half-time

After a controversial end to the first 45 minutes, the referee sent off three players from each team at half-time.

The last time these two sides faced off in an Indian Super League match in March, goalkeepers from both teams received red cards for similar fouls.

The Super Cup quarterfinal between Jamshedpur FC and FC Goa saw both sides playing with eight men during the whole of the second half.

After a controversial end to the first 45 minutes, the referee sent off three players from each team at half-time - Anas Edathodika, Belfort Kervensfils and Subrata of Jamshedpur and Brandon Fernandes, Sergio Juste and Bruno Pinheiro from Goa.

Goa's Brandon seemed to have put his side 2-0 up just before the break. However, immediate protests by the Jamshedpur players prompted referee R. Venkatesh to consult with the fourth official. The goal was then overturned and a goal-kick awarded.

Late on Thursday, Goa had filed an appeal with the AIFF disciplinary committee, challenging the referee's decision in the hope of getting the red cards rescinded, a club official confirmed to  Sportstar .  After the 5-1 win over Jamshedpur, the Derrick Pereira-managed outfit will take on East Bengal in the semifinal on April 16.

The referee appeared to gesture to the players that the decision had been reached after reviewing TV replays. The replays showed Jamshedpur goalkeeper Subrata palming the ball behind the touchline before Brandon retrieved it to slot home.

The tournament has not implemented the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, and the match official's apparent reliance on video footage sparked outrage from the Goa players and their bench as tension spilt over during the break.
