New world number one Justin Thomas will play on the European Tour next month when he features in the Open de France at Le Golf National - the venue for the 2018 Ryder Cup.

The 25-year-old ended Dustin Johnson's 15-month stay at the top of the rankings when he finished a shot ahead of his rival at The Players Championship, tying for 11th after a six-under 66 in the final round.

And Thomas has now confirmed his participation in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, joining the fourth-ranked Jon Rahm and defending champion Tommy Fleetwood in a strong Open de France field.

"I'm very excited to have the opportunity to go and play in a European Tour event," Thomas said. "It is something I haven't done since my first start as a pro when I went to play the Dunhill Links.

"I'm not sure what to expect, having never played a Rolex Series event. I know they're fairly new to the European Tour, so it will be really fun to be a part of it.

"I'm sure the field is going to be tremendous, especially being a Ryder Cup venue. It will have a lot of talent."

Le Golf National will become just the second course in mainland Europe to host the Ryder Cup in September.
