Shourya wins gold in Deaf Shooting World Championships

Shourya Saini shot 452.4, after a qualification world record of 580, to clinch the men’s 50-metre rifle 3-position gold in the second World Deaf shooting championships in Hannover, Germany on Friday.

Shourya, a trainee of coach Anjali Bhagwat, beat Oleksandr Kostyk of Ukraine by nearly 10 points for the gold. He had earlier won the 10m air rifle silver behind compatriot Dhanush Srikanth. The bronze medal was also won by an Indian, Murtaza Vania.

Khushagra Rajawat finished fourth in the event.

Chetan Sapkal also medalled for India, clinching bronze in the men’s 25m sports pistol.

TENNIS

Vivaan, Ranjhana win big in AITA junior tournament

Vivaan Mirdha and Ranjhana Sangram won a double crown each in the AITA super series junior tennis tournament at the Harvest Academy, Jassowal in Ludhiana.

Unseeded Vivaan won the under-16 boys title by beating Abhinav Choudhari 6-3, 6-4 in the final. Seeded second, Vivaan beat third seed Viraj Choudhary 6-1, 6-1 for the under-14 title.

While Vivaan did not drop a set in winning the both the singles events, Ranjhana Sangram dropped one set on way to winning the girls under-16 and 14 titles.

Vaidehi in singles semifinals and doubles final in Thailand

Vaidehi Chaudhari outplayed Anri Nagata of Japan 6-2, 6-1 to reach the semifinals of the $25,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand, on Friday.

Vaidehi made the doubles final as well, in partnership with Shrivalli Bhamidipaty, beating a Japanese pair 7-5, 7 5.

Shrivalli had gone down fighting in the singles quarterfinals in three sets against Maria Tkacheva.

Chiranth Vishwanath grabs pole positions in premier Pro-Stock categories in penultimate round of the MMSC fmsci Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship 2024

Chiranth Vishwanath, the 17-year-old from Bengaluru who is in the middle of his breakthrough season, came up with two stunning rides to grab pole positions in both the premier Pro-Stock categories as the fourth and penultimate round of the MRF MMSC fmsci Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship 2024.

For Chiranth, it was his maiden pole position in the Pro-Stock 301-400cc Open category, and he followed it up by taking P1 in the Pro-Stock 165cc Open class for a rare double. His arch-rival and TVS Racing teammate Sarthak Chavan, also 17, from Pune, will line up in P2 behind Chiranth in both the categories. Incidentally, Chiranth emulated Sarthak’s double pole that the Pune star had secured in Round 1 in June.

The qualifying sessions dished out exciting fare with all pole-sitters leaving it very late before delivering the hot laps for P1 slots. Chennai teenager Abdul Basim (Rockers Racing) took pole position in the Novice (Stock 165cc) category as did another local rider, 25-year-old Kaushik Subbiah Ganesan (RACR Castrol Power1 Ultimate) in the Stock 301-400cc Novice class in the National Championship.

Chiranth’s best performance on the day came in the PS 301-400cc qualifying session where he came up with a sizzling lap with a little more than a minute left to upstage Sarthak who finished ahead of veteran and Chennai ace Rajini Krishnan (RACR Castrol Power1 Ultimate).

In P4 and P5 were TVS Racing’s Deepak Ravikumar and Alwin Sundar (Gusto Racing India), respectively, with less than a second separating the top five.

Late in the evening, Chiranth was back in the saddle, this time in the Pro-Stock 165cc Open class qualifying session that he won with another standout performance. Yet again, Sarthak was pushed to P2 with multiple National champion Jagan Kumar making it a front row sweep for TVS Racing.

Udaipur hosts Zinc City half marathon on September 6, 2024

Hindustan Zinc Limited will host the inaugural Vedanta Zinc City half marathon in Udaipur on September 29.

It is already labelled as the “most beautiful marathon”. It promises an exceptional experience for the runners as the route winds around the Fateh Sagar Lake and the majestic Aravali ranges. The route also has iconic landmarks like Maharana Pratap Smarak, Saheliyon Ki Bari and the Neemuch Mata Mandir hill.

Celebrating the arrival of autumn, the marathon sports the tagline, #RunForZeroHunger, as the objective is the fight against rural malnutrition.

Adding to the charm of the event, along with the launch of the race-day jersey, a portrait of the marathon logo was made using over 1400 pieces of Rubik’s cube. The artwork was made in six hours by Sumeet Dwibedy, an employee of Hindustan Zinc.

The Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc, Priya Agarwal Hebbar was pleased with the launch of the marathon, and emphasised its power to unite people.

The District Collector of Udaipur, Arvind Poswal was happy that the missing piece in Udaipur’s cultural ecosystem was filled by the marathon. Udaipur’s Inspector General of Police, Ajay Pal Lamba, said that the marathon would put the city on the world map and pave the way for its further development.

Apart from the half marathon there will be the 10-kilometre Cool Run and the 5-km Dream Run.

PICKLEBALL

National pickleball championship to be hosted in Panipat from October 4 to 6

The National pickleball championship, featuring all age groups of boys and girls, apart from men, women and veterans, will be hosted at the Sewa Sadhana Kendra, Patti Kalyana, Samalkha, Panipat, from October 4 to 6.

The affiliated units of the All India Pickleball Association (AIPA) will be eligible to compete in the championship. The last date for sending entries by the State units will be September 29.

All the teams will be provided accommodation from October 4 to 7. The host will also serve all the meals for the players, coaches and officials at the venue.

India dominates the Commonwealth chess championship as S.P. Sethuraman wins the tournament’s main title

India dominated the Commonwealth chess championship at Waskaduwa (Sri Lanka), walking away with most of the medals on offer. Second seed S.P. Sethuraman won the tournament’s main title, scoring seven points from nine rounds. Fifth-seeded N.R. Vignesh, also with seven points, finished runner-up after the tie-breakers were applied.

Dilshan Liyanage of the host finished third with 6.5 points, the same as J. Deepan Chakravarthy, who had to be content with the fourth place. Top seed Vaibhav Suri was placed ninth.

Among women, Mary Ann Gomes came first, scoring 5.5 points, followed by Sakshi Chitlange and Soumya Swaminathan. In Under-20, Arjun Adireddy (five points)and Kalyani Sirin (4.5) finished first, in the open and the girls’ sections respectively.

Quarterfinals set in Subroto Cup

Hemanchong struck the match winner in the 27th minute to help Minerva Public School, Mohali, to a 1-0 victory over Ramakrishna Mission Vivekanand Vidyapeeth, Chhattisgarh in a group-E league match of the 63rd Subroto Cup junior boys football tournament on Friday.

The Punjab team was joined by Sri Lanka Schools Football Association, RMSA High School, Mizoram and Amenity Public School, Uttarakhand in the quarterfinals.

Four other teams had qualified for the quarterfinals earlier.
