Indian Oil Corporation is set to offer enhanced financial assistance to budding champions and recruit more sportspersons in six newly identified sports in addition to the 10 existing ones.

Indian Oil Corporation is set to offer enhanced financial assistance to budding champions and recruit more sportspersons in six newly identified sports in addition to the 10 existing ones.
Making the announcement on the sidelines of the “Sports Conclave 2018”, here, on Thursday, IOC’s Director (HR) Ranjan K. Mohapatra said that volleyball, basketball, shooting, archery, wrestling, kabaddi and boxing had been identified as ‘thrust games’.
“We have plans to increase the number of players on scholarship from 150, at present, to about 200 or 250. The stipend, which is currently at ₹9,000 per month will be increased to ₹15,000 per month. The one-time financial assistance, which is about ₹48,000 at present, could be raised to ₹60,000. In addition, we are looking to enhance cash rewards for our performers at international level. Exceptional performances will also be recognized with out of turn promotions.”
The day-long conclave saw some of the leading sportspersons, including table tennis stars Sharath Kamal, a number of chess champions – Grandmasters B. Adhiban, M. R. Lalith Babu, M. Karthikeyan, Abhijit Kunte, Surya Shekhar Ganguly, D. Harika and National champions Padmini Rout, Mary Ann Gomes, Soumya Swaminathan – badminton doubles specialist N. Sikki Reddy, apart from several athletes, hockey players, cueists, carrom players, etc. Later, in the evening, P. Gopi Chand, Manika Batra, P. Kashyap and Rohan Bopanna joined the gathering. The prominent absentees were cricketers Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara.
