ITF men’s tournament results

Davis Cupper and top seed Digvijay Pratap Singh had to fight his way past qualifier Shivank Bhatnagar 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3 in the pre-quarterfinals of the $15,000 ITF men’s tennis tournament at the Ahmedabad City Tennis Foundation courts on Wednesday.

In the quarterfinals, Digvijay will be up against the national championship finalist Karan Singh.

Qualifier Raghav Jaisinghani beat fifth seed Rishab Agarwal 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(2). He will challenge Sidharth Rawat in the quarterfinals.

Shanker through to quarters at National sub-junior championship

Shanker Heisnam beat top seed Dhiraj Reddy 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the pre-quarterfinals of under-16 boys in the Fenesta National sub-junior tennis championship at the DLTA Complex on Wednesday.

FOOTBALL

N.P. Akbar Sidhique, who is making his Santosh Trophy debut, scored two goals as former seven-time champion Kerala opened its campaign in the 77th National football championship with a 3-0 drubbing of Gujarat at the SAG Benaulim Ground, Benaulim in Goa, on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old midfielder Akbar, a Wayanad United FC player and a former Calicut University star, scored in the 12th and 33rd minutes in the Group ‘A’ match.

HOCKEY

Mizoram’s Lallengvunga High School crowned Nehru under-17 girls hockey champion

Two goals each from Malsawmkimi Pachuau and Laltlanchhungi, including one each in the last quarter, helped Lallengvunga High School, Thenzawl, Mizoram, to a 4-3 victory over CM Excellent High School, Bariatu, Ranchi, in the final of the Charanjit Rai 29th Nehru under-17 girls hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium on Wednesday.

Sugan Sanga, Salomi Nag and Roshni Aind scored the goals for the Ranchi team that led 3-2 at the end of the third quarter.

The champion team was presented a cash prize of Rs.160,000 and the runner-up Rs.96,000. The fairplay trophy and Rs.20,000 was presented to Kiddy’s Corner School, Gwalior.

The coach of the Mizoram team, Lalrothuami was awarded Rs.15,000 and the coach of runner-up, Karuna Purty was presented Rs.10,000.
