India Seniors win silver at Bridge Olympiad

India Seniors signed off with a silver medal as they went down 165-258 to USA in the final of the 16th World Bridge Olympiad here.

The Indian team comprised Kamal Mukherjee, Vibhas Todi , Badal Das, Pranab Bardhan, Arun Bapat, Ravi Goenka and Girish Bijoor, who is the non-playing captain.

In the 96 board final, which took place over two days and six segments, the competition was neck and neck after the first two segments.

However, USA won the third segment decisively, with a score of 53-7 IMPs, and from there, it never looked back, despite the Indian team’s determined efforts.

Meanwhile, in two pairs events held alongside the final, the young Indian duo of Sanjit Dey and Binod Shaw excelled, finishing as the top performers in both events and ending their maiden international competition on a high note.

TENNIS

Balaji-Andreozzi pair makes opening-round exit from Moselle Open

Indian tennis player N Sriram Balaji and his Argentine partner Guido Andreozzi made an early exit from the Moselle Open after losing their men’s doubles first-round match here.

The Indo-Argentine duo squandered a one-set lead, ultimately losing 7-6, 2-6, 7-10 to the Dutch team of Matwe Middlekoop and Jean-Julien Rojer on Sunday.

Balaji and Andreozzi relied on their strong first serve to secure the opening set in a tie-break. However, Middlekoop and Rojer dominated the second set, winning it 6-2.

In the deciding set, Middlekoop and Rojer came from behind to claim victory, winning the tie-breaker 10-7 with an impressive return game.

Sumit Nagal had also made a first-round exit after losing to France’s Corentin Moutet from the singles competition earlier on Sunday.

Harmeet bags ‘double’ in Caracas Feeder Series

India’s Harmeet Desi bagged a ‘double’ winning the men’s singles and mixed doubles titles (with Krittwika Sinha Roy) in the WTT Feeder Series table tennis tournament in Caracas. Venezuela on Monday. In the singles, the Indian World No. 90, seeded two in the event, thumped Joe Seyfried of France, ranked 149 in the world and seeded five, in the final for his maiden Feeder crown. 

Pairing with his wife Krittwika, the Indian pair, seeded second, defeated the top-seeded Cuban duo of Jorge Campos and Daniela Fonseca Carrazana 8-11, 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 11-5 in the summit clash.

Cavalry Gold Cup: Siddhant scores five as Jindal Panther wins

Siddhant Sharma scored five goals in guiding Jindal Panther to a 10 goals to 5 1/2 victory over Army-Navy in a league match of the Habanos Cavalry Gold Cup polo tournament at the Army Equestrian Centre, Delhi Cantonment, on Monday.

The results (league): Jindal Panther 10 (Siddhant Sharma 5, Simran Shergill 3, Hurr Ali 2) bt Army-Navy 5 1/2 (Bautista Alberdi 3, AP Singh, handicap 1 1/2).

Seema guides CM Girls High School to victory

Seema Tirkey struck an early goal to help CM Girls High School, Simdega, to a 1-0 victory over Odisha Naval Tata Academy in a super-league match of the Charanjit Rai 30th Nehru girls hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium on Monday.

In the semifinals to be played on Tuesday, the Jharkhand team will play Kiddy’s Corner School from Gwalior. The other semifinal will be between Directorate General NCC and Victory English School, Tehnzawl, Mizoram.

Senior National men’s hockey C’ships: Madhya Pradesh thumps Andaman & Nicobar 29-0

Three of the six matches on the opening day of the Senior National men’s hockey championships here on Monday turned out to be extremely one-sided. Madhya Pradesh thumped Andaman & Nicobar 29-0, Manipur thumped Bihar 19-1 while Karnataka blanked Uttarakhand 10-0. Host Tamil Nadu scripted a comfortable 7-0 win over Andhra Pradesh, but the former failed to convert 11 penalty corners.

Sift Kaur among many to compete in World University shooting championship from Nov 9

Some of the best shooters of the country including Asian Games gold medallists Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Sift Kaur Samra and Palak Gulia are scheduled to compete in the World University shooting championship to be organised by the Manav Rachna Educational Institutions at the Dr. Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad, from November 9 to 13.

Manini Kaushik, Sainyam, Simranpreet Kaur Brar, Umamahesh Maddineni, Bakhtyaruddin Malek, Kirti Gupta, Abhay Singh Sekhon and Bhavtegh Gill are some of the other prominent shooters scheduled to compete in the championship.

India had topped the medals table in the last edition held in Chengdu, China, in July-August last year, with eight gold, four silver and two bronze medals.
