SHOOTING
Hazel continued to dominate air rifle in the sixth National shooting selection trials as she topped the women’s and youth events at the Madhya Pradesh Academy in Bhopal on Monday.
The 15-year-old Hazel outplayed Nancy 16-2 for the women’s title, after having topped qualification with an impressive score of 631.2.
Hazel beat the 17-year-old Nancy 17-9 in the youth section, but it was Nancy who reversed the role by beating Hazel 17-13 in the junior section.
Meghana Sajjanar took the third place in the women’s event ahead of Arya Borse, Shobha Kanwar, Shreya Agrawal, Bhakti Bhaskar and Riya Yadav.
Former world No.1 Elavenil Valarivan (628.1) missed the second stage by 0.2 point, while other Olympians, Ayonika Paul (625.1), Apurvi Chandela (624.8) and Anjum Moudgil (624.7) also failed to make the cut by bigger margin.
In men’s rapid fire pistol at the Dr. Karni Singh Range in Tughlakabad, Ankur Goel continued to assert his expertise in the second stage as he topped the field, beating Bhavesh Shekhawat 28-26.
Young Sameer Ghulia finished third, and climbed to the second spot in the junior section behind Adarsh Singh.
Qualification topper Udhayveer Sandhu (583), Olympic silver medallist Vijay Kumar (580) and Adarsh Singh (580) failed to make it to the medal round in the men’s event.

SWIMMING
Bhavya Sachdeva won the 100-metre and 400-metre freestyle gold medals in the under-18 girls section on the second day of the Khelo India girls swimming challenge series at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee swimming pool.
Utsav, Disha Bhandari and Hema won the gold in three other events.
In the under-15 section, Kshama Iyer won her fourth gold in 100-metre freestyle, while the other gold medals were won by Suhani Jain, Jiya Yadav, Avni Chhabra and Nitika Saini.
There was prize money for each event, ranging from Rs.6,000 to Rs.2,000 for the first to fifth place.

TENNIS
Seventh seed Karman Thandi was beaten 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 by Cadence Brace in the first qualifying round of the $251,750 WTA tennis tournament in Granby, Canada.
The first round exit fetched one WTA point and $1,750.
In the Challenger in Bangkok, Prajnesh Gunneswaran was beaten 6-3, 6-3 by Eveny Donskoy in the first round.

ITF J4 event: Third seed Bushan Haobham knocked out in first round
Unseeded American Venkat Rishi Batlanki knocked out third seed Bushan Haobham 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in first round of the ITF J4 event at the Madras Gymkhana Club in Chennai on Monday.
Gagan Vimal was the other seeded player who was eliminated. Seeded eighth, Gagan lost 1-6, 2-6 to Adhirit Awal.
In girls, Pushti Laddha was the only seeded player to get knocked out. Laddha, seeded sixth, was beaten 6-2, 7-5 by Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi.
First day of main draw action also saw two retirements. Keerthivassan Suresh conceded the match after being down 1-6 against fourth seed Daksh Prasad. Agriya Yadav retired midway through his match against sixth seed Rethin Pranav when he was 0-6, 0-3 down.
