Archery World Cup Stage 2: Indian women's team wins recurve bronze

The Indian recurve women’s team bagged a bronze medal and Mohan Bhardwaj reached the semifinals to remain in contention for a compound men’s individual medal in the Archery World Cup Stage-2 in Gwangju, Korea, on Thursday.

The fifth-ranked Indian women's side – consisting of Ridhi Phor, Komalika Bari and Ankita Bhakat – beat Brazil 5-4 and Mexico 6-2 but lost to Korea 6-2 in the semifinals.

The trio defeated second-ranked Chinese Taipei – including World Cup bronze medallist Kuo Tzu Ying, Olympics medallist Lei Chien-Ying and Worlds medallist Chiu Yi-Ching – 6-2 (56-52, 54-51, 54-55, 55-54) to take the bronze medal.

India – comprising Tarundeep Rai, Neeraj Chauhan and Jayanta Talukdar – got a first round bye and beat Turkey 5-4 (shoot off 28-27) before suffering a 6-2 defeat against France in a recurve men's team quarterfinal contest.

In compound men's individual category, Mohan, ranked 42nd, got the better of Australians Patrick Coghlan 146-144 and Scott Brice 146-143, seventh-placed Slovakian Jozef Bosansky 149-145 and Korean Yang Jaewon 147-140 to reach the last-four. The Indian will face Austria's Nico Wiener next.

Aman Saini lost to Denmark's Mathias Fullerton 149-147 in the pre-quarterfinals. Third-placed Abhishek Verma was stunned in the second round, while Rajat Chauhan fell in the opening round.

In compound women’s individual competitions, Muskan Kirar exited in the pre-quarterfinals, losing to Korean Yunhee Kim 143-142. Priya Gurjar and Avneet Kaur could not go beyond the second round. Raginee Marko lost in the first round.

Asian U-16 tournament

Top seed Dhruv Sachdeva cut short the fine run of Levin Safoor Mydeen with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the semifinals of the Asian under-16 tennis tournament at the Modern School courts, Barakhamba Road, on Thursday.

The champion of the under-14 event last week, Levin had commendably sustained his good run into the semifinals before meeting his match.

In the final, Dhruv will meet Akshat Dhull who beat second seed Jason David for the loss of four games.

In the girls section, the top two seeds Riya Sachdeva and Nainika Bendram set up a title clash.

Riya beat Aakruti Sonkusare while Nainika beat Saumrita Verma. Saumrita went on to win the doubles title in partnership with Aditi Rawat, beating Nainika and Ishi Maheshwari 6-2, 6-3 in the final.

India finishes Junior World Cup campaign with a silver and bronze on final day

After the gold rush that saw the team grab 13 of the 31 medals at stake, India wound up the show with a silver and bronze medal in the Junior World Cup shooting in Suhl, Germany.

Sift Kaur Samra and Surya Pratap Singh won the 50-metre rifle prone mixed team silver, as they were beaten by the Polish team of Maja Magdalena Gawenda and Wiktor Sajdak 17-15.

Areeba Khan, Parinaaz Dhaliwal, Darshna Rathore who won the skeet team bronze in the Junior World Cup in Germany.

 

The Indian pair had dominated the first qualification stage, but lost the edge in the next two matches including the narrow loss in the gold contest.

In women’s skeet team, Parinaaz Dhaliwal, Darshna Rathore and Areeba Khan bagged the bronze, outplaying host Germany 6-0. The Indian team had shot 194 in the qualification stage, and missed the chance to fight for the gold by one point to the eventual champion Britain.

Overall, it was an assertive performance by India as it bagged 13 gold, 15 silver and five bronze medals for a total of 33.

Italy was second with four gold, two silver and five bronze. Poland (4), US (3), Germany (2), France (2), Australia, Britain and Bulgaria were the other teams that managed to win the gold medals from among the 21 countries that figured in the medals table.
