Final decision on CWG 2022 rests with the IOA and GoI, says Rajeev Mehta

Speaking at the launch of 'Tamil Nadu's Quest for Gold', by late historian S.Muthiah, the Sec-Gen of the IOA said CWG 2022 will be discussed in the AGM.

Tamil Nadu’s Quest For Gold, a book that provides a comprehensive look into the modern history of sports in the State, by the late historian and chronicler S. Muthiah was launched in Chennai on Friday.

Vinod Kumar Tiwari, director- International & NOC Relations, Olympic Council of Asia released the book at an event that also saw TN State Olympic Association (TNOA) President N.Ramachandran in attendance.

The book is an initiative by the latter and provides a commentary on thirty-two major sports. Each chapter (forty-three in all) intends to give an insight into the origin of a sport, the journey of its development and infrastructure, the remarkable events and achievements of the sportspersons, their coaches and notable administrators.

Speaking on the occasion, Ramachandran said it is “probably the first time a State Olympic Association has brought out a book on the history of sports in a State”.

"The idea for this book was conceived when my father and Ramachandran went on a stroll in the Madras Club here,' says Parvathi Muthiah, daughter of the late historian.

Incidentally, the book features many photographs tracing sports in the state from the archives of The Hindu.

Also present at the lauch where Anandeshwar Pandey and Rajeev Mehta, Treasurer and Secretary General of the Indian Olympic Association respectively.

India's participation in 2022 Commonwealth Games will be discussed in AGM, says Mehta Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Secretary General Rajeev Mehta on Friday said that its executive committee and general body will deliberate on its president Narinder Batra’s call to permanently pull out of the Commonwealth Games. “Everything will be discussed in the meeting of the executive committee and the AGM. I have seen a lot of reports in the press on (the issue). Everything will be discussed,” he said. Batra recently said that the Commonwealth Games is a waste of time and the country should consider a permanent pullout. He said the level of competition at the CWG is not particularly high and that India should consider a pullout to improve its own standards. The call had evoked mixed reactions from sportspersons and administrators. Mehta said the much-postponed National Games would be held in Goa in November next year. Asked to comment on Batra’s statement, former IOA chief and TNOA president N Ramachandran, who was also present, said, “I am there only for the athletes. Athletes should participate in every event and win medals. “At the end of day, it is a matter to be decided by Indian Olympic Association and the Government of India. They (IOA) have their own AGM, they have their executive committee. They will take a call.” (PTI)
