Hungary registered a thrilling victory against returning Olympic champions, Germany, to claim the women's kayak double 500m gold with a breathtakingly slim margin on Tuesday.

Danuta Kozak and Gabriella Szabo won in 1:43.687, with Tina Dietze and Franziska Weber of Germany snapping at their heels to finish second in less than a 10th of a second. Poland, which finished third in London, added another bronze to its collection.

However, it was not a day just for spoilers at the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon. New Zealand's Lisa Carrington overcame a stiff competition in the women's kayak single 200m to win her second Olympic gold in the event.

In the men's canoe singles 1000m, Germany's Sebastian Brendel won the gold, while Isaquias Queiroz Dos Santos of Brazil claimed the silver and Serghei Tarnovschi of Moldova stelled for the bronze.

In the men's kayak single 1000m, Marcus Walz of Spain won the gold, followed by Josef Dostal (silver) of the Czech Republic and Roman Anoshkin (bronze) of Russia.
