Indian squash team leaves for Worlds

The top four Indian players in terms of world ranking — Saurav Ghosal, Vikram Malhotra, Harinder Pal Sandhu and Mahesh Mangaonkar — form the four-member team.

The top four Indian players in terms of world ranking, Saurav Ghosal, Vikram Malhotra, Harinder Pal Sandhu and Mahesh Mangaonkar form the four-member Indian team for the WSF-Men's World Team Championship scheduled in Marseille (France) from November 27 to December 3.

India is seeded eight and is in Pool H along with Malaysia and Austria. The championship was not held in 2015 but in 2013, India which was seeded 8 then too, had finished seventh, beating Malaysia.

Vikram, currently the next highest ranked Indian male after Ghosal, is the only new face in the side which then had Ramit Tandon as one of the four members.

India's task is clear cut, it has to qualify for the pre-quarterfinal where its potential rival could be Scotland. According to National Coach Cyrus Poncha, who is accompanying the team, Scotland is no easy opponent. “The first look out is to top the pool,” said Poncha. Also travelling with the team will be Coach Balamurugan and Physio Dimple.

In all, 24 nations are taking part in this Championship including debutants Iraq and Jamaica. The teams have been divided into eight groups and the top two from each group will progress to the pre-quarterfinals.

In the previous edition, England had emerged the winner beating Egypt.
