Joshna Chinappa was defeated by fifth seeded Egyptian Omneya Abdel Kawy in straight games.

After Dipika Pallikal was knocked out the Tournament of Champions first round, Joshna Chinappa was leading India’s flag at the prestigious squash event in New York. However, on Monday, India’s hope of a positive new year start ended with Joshna’s exit.

Joshna, who won the first round against Egyptian wildcard Kanzy El Defrawy, lost to the fifth seeded Egyptian Omneya Abdel Kawy in straight games 11-9, 11-3, 11-9 in the second round.

Coached by former world number one Amr Shabana, mentor to many upcoming players in Egypt, Omneya had specifically prepared for the event.

The Indian national champion never looked in contention against the Egyptian. In a tight third game, Omneya squeezed out of a 8-9 situation and turned it around in her favour, scripting an easy win.
