Day two of the Australian Open will see Roger Federer begin his campaign for a record 20th Grand Slam title, while women's top seed Simona Halep seeks her first. Here's a look at some of the key contests for the day.

1) Roger Federer vs Aljaz Bedene

The Swiss maestro Roger Federer comes into the Australian Open after clinching the Hopman Cup for Switzerland. The 19-time Grand Slam champion looked in great touch and will get his title defence off to a start against a rather tricky opponent, Slovenia's Aljaz Bedene.

2) Simona Halep vs Destanee Aiava

Women's top seed Simona Halep will look to break her Grand Slam duck when she takes on local teenage wildcard awardee Destanee Aiava.

Halep has suffered first-round defeats in her last two trips to Melbourne but will have a chance to turn things around this time, given hr sublime form that saw her win the Shenzhen Open last week.

3) Alexander Zverev vs Thomas Fabbiano

Giant German Alexander Zverev has been widely tipped for greatness but has so far failed to go beyond a Grand Slam fourth round -- and will look to end that streak this year. The 73-ranked Fabbiano comes to Melbourne after losing in the round-of-31 in the Qatar Open.

He has the chance to become the youngest Grand Slam men's singles champion in a decade -- a record currently held by Novak Djokovic who was 20 years and 250 days when he won the Australian Open in 2008.

4) Garbine Muguruza vs Jessika Ponchet

Fourth seed Garbine Muguruza is battling fitness issues as she aims to secure a third Grand Slam title. The Wimbledon champion pulled out of the Sydney International with a thigh injury and earlier last week she had retired from the Brisbane International with cramps.

However, she shouldn't have a tough time when she faces 21-year-old Jessika Ponchet on Tuesday.

5) Dominic Thiem vs Guido Pella

Austria's Dominic Thiem, who lost to Rafael Nadal in an exhibition match a couple of days ago, faces Argentina's Guido Pella in the first round on Tuesday.

The fourth-seeded Thiem was forced to withdraw from the semifinal of the Qatar Open due to a fever and will look to make amends against Pella.
