The American, fresh from beating World No. 1 Angelique Kerber, brushed past the seventh-seeded Muguruza 6-4, 6-0 on Tuesday.

World No. 35 Vandeweghe simply overpowered the Spaniard from the baseline, needing just one hour, 24 minutes to reach her first grand slam semi-final.

Dominant from the outset on Rod Laver Arena, Vandeweghe >set up a last-four clash against fellow American Venus Williams.

Her win at Melbourne Park rarely looked in doubt, although missed chances threatened to cost her.

Vandeweghe wasted numerous break points before finally taking a 4-3 lead, courtesy of a double fault from Muguruza.

Muguruza had a chance to break back in the 10th game, but Vandeweghe steadied to serve out the set.

The second set was one-sided from the moment Vandeweghe broke in the opening game.

Muguruza had no answers as her opponent dictated from the baseline, her forehand doing most of the damage.

The French Open champion won just 10 points in the second set as Vandeweghe took complete control.
