Wimbledon, Day 2 - As it Happened
02:12 am: USA's Alison Riske beats Croatian Donna Vekic 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to enter the second round.
12:44 am: Dutch player Kiki Bertens defeats Mandy Minella of Luxembourg in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Bertens will face USA's Taylor Townsend in the next round.
12:42 am: Lucas Pouille beats fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
12:38 am: Caspur Ruud loses to John Isner 3-6, 4-6, 6-7 (9-11) on Court 2.
11:04pm: WOO! It's Nadal vs Kyrgios in the second round! Rafael Nadal makes easy work of Sugita, beating him 6-3, 6-1, 6-3. Speaking of Kyrgios, Wimbledon likes its bad boys .
On Nick Kyrgios match-up and all the talk around it: "I'm too old for all this stuff now. Too many years on the tour. What they say, they say it. I'm not a guy that's going to be in a fight with nobody and I'm here to enjoy my sport and keep doing the thing I love as much as possible."
He hopes the match is on centre court. Us too, Rafa. Us too.
10:58pm: Another one bites the dust! Denis Shapovalov joins his Next Gen mates out of the Wimbledon in the very first round. Ricardas Berankis beats the Canadian 7-6 (0), 6-4, 6-3.
10:49pm: Serena Williams is through with 6-2, 7-5 win against Giulia Gatto-Monticone.
Serena who celebrates like she's won the tournament feels good about her game. “This is the best I’ve felt since February. I had to skip most of the hard court season and only played a couple of matches on clay. I’m so happy I can walk. I’m better now. I feel so thankful. Now I get to play with my baby,” says the 23-time Grand Slam champion, who has apparently been carrying a niggle in her knee for most of the year.
10:48pm: Diego Schwartzman is through, despite a minor scare when he lost the second set to Matthew Ebden. He wins 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
10:24pm: Maria Sharapova, who was out injured for most of the year, has retired from her match while trailing 5-0 in the third set. Pauline Parmentier progresses to the next round.
10:22pm: Nadal has eased through the second set, taking it 6-1. He's only one set away from facing Nick Kyrgios next round. What a faceoff that'll be! It's going to be hilarious, I bet.
10:18pm: Berankis wins the second set too, taking it 6-4. Shapovalov needs to pick it up if he's going to join his countryman Felix Auger-Aliassime in the next round.
10:10pm: Petra Kvitova wins! After missing French Open with an injury, she's off to a good start here, beating Ons Jabeur who was expected to produce an upset 6-4, 6-2.
9:58pm: Serena Williams wins the first set easily, 6-2, against Italy's Giulia Gatto-Monticone.
9:52pm: Parmentier wins the second set tie-break and levels the match at a set-a-piece.
It has been 15 years since Maria Sharapova became the youngest Wimbledon champion after Lottie Dod and Martina Hingis. Today she was a game away from the second round in the second set, but Pauline Parmentier has forced a decider.
9:45pm: Danger averted and Nadal takes the first set 6-3 against Sugita.
9:39pm: Pauline Parmentier is fighting back against Sharapova. After losing the first set 6-4, she's on set point in the second. Sharapova saves it and wins the game to level the set 6-6.
Carla Suarez Navarro beats Sam Stosur 6-2, 7-5. Stosur, is a former champion here. She won the mixed doubles titles in 2008 and 2014 and is a three-time women's doubles finalist here.
9:30pm: Denis Shapovalov. From 5-0 up in the first set, he goes on to lose the tie-break 7-0. Ricardas Berankis is up a set.
REPORT | Federer into Wimbledon second round for 17th successive year
9:22pm: Brave stuff from the Japanese qualifier. Sugita saves the first two break points, but Nadal wins the third. It's two-all in the opening set.
9:19pm: Nadal's turn to hold three break points to level the first set.
9:16pm: Nadal holds serve but is down 1-2 to Sugita in the first set.
9:12pm: Rafael Nadal is in action on Court 1 and HE'S IN TROUBLE IMMEDIATELY! Broken by Yuichi Sugita in the first game. And two break points for Sugita to go 3-0 up!
9:09: After an initial scare, Roger Federer is through to the second round of Wimbledon 2019.
The eight-time champion lost the opening set 3-6 to unheralded South African Lloyd Harris, who was making his debut at Wimbledon. But it was all smooth sailing from thereon for the second seed, who won the next three sets 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.
Bit of trivia: The last time Federer lost his opening set at Wimbledon was in 2010.
8:58pm: Another seed goes down! Garbine Muguruza loses to Brazilian qualifier Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-4, 6-4.
8:47pm: Amanda Anisimova , the French Open semifinalist, is through to the second round with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sorana Cirstea. Anisimova is another American teenager rising through the ranks quickly. She's only 17.
8:38pm: Federer wins the third set 6-2 and is now cruising through. Well, the first set was a nice gesture from the eight-time Wimbledon champion.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is into the second round with a 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 win over Bernard Tomic.
8:35pm: Federer breaks again in the third set and leads 5-2. He's serving for the set.
Johanna Konta is through with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Ana Bogdan.
8:33pm: Tamara Zidansek beats Eugenie Bouchard 6-3, 5-7, 8-6. Kristina Mladenovic beats Vitalia Diatchenko 7-5, 6-7 (7), 6-2.
8:14pm: 2015 champion Garbine Muguruza has lost the first set 6-4 to Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia. Maria Sharapova, who won here 15 years ago, gets her match against Pauline Parmentier underway. 2004 was 15 years ago?!
8:08pm: That first set was a false alarm. Federer has closed out the second set 6-1 in 20 minutes.

8:03pm: Some other results I missed while I was watching Federer.
Matteo Berrettini comes from a set down to beat Aljaz Bedene 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (3). Nikoloz Basilashvili goes one better. He comes from two sets down to beat Jamess Ward 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 8-6. GilLes Simon beats Salvatore Caruso 7-6 (7), 6-3, 6-2.
8:00pm: Federer breaks and he leads 3-1 in the second set.
7:46pm: Federer loses the first set! Lloyd Harris wins it 6-3. The South African must have dreamt about meeting Federer, but taking a set? Good job, young man.
7:42pm: French Open finalist and fifth seed Dominic Thiem is OUT! Sam Querrey serves a bagel in the fifth set and wins 6-7 (4), 7-6 (1), 6-3, 6-0. Wimbledon hasn't always been nice to him.
7:38pm: Lloyd Harris holds and he leads 5-2 in the first set. The 22-year-old must be gleaming inside.

7:35pm: No need to panic, but Federer has been broken! Lloyd Harris leads 4-2 in the first set. The Swiss legend has looked slightly shaky early one. Just warming up, I guess.
REPORT | Wimbledon 2019: Thiem suffers first round shock against Querrey
7:30pm: Dominic Thiem is in trouble. Sam Querrey has taken the third set 6-3 and leads the fourth 3-0, up a break.
7:10pm: Nick Kyrgios wins the fifth set easily and beats Jordan Thompson 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, 0-6, 6-1. Such an inconsistent match. You don't expect them to be so straightforward when Kyrgios is involved.
7:00pm: Wildcard Marcos Baghdatis, who will retire after this tournament, is through to the second round, beating Brayden Schnur 6-2, 6-4, 6-4.
7:00pm: Kerber's through as well! She beats Tatjana Maria 6-4, 6-3. And that means a GOAT and Wimbledon's favourite son, Roger Federer, is up next on Centre Court.

6:56pm: Barty wraps up her first round match against Zheng quickly. The World No.1 wins it 6-4, 6-2.
6:47pm: WOAH! BAGEL ALERT! Jordan Thompson dominates the fourth set, taking it 6-0. Kyrgios has no answer. Or does he?
6:20pm: Kyrgios, finally (after God knows how many chances), takes the third set 7-6, winning the tiebreak 12-10. And cue the celebrations.
6:07pm: Speaking of tie-breaks, Sam Querrey has taken Dominic Thiem into one in the first set.
6:06pm: Kyrgios does a Kyrgios. Serving for the third set at 40-15, he tries the underarm serve, doesn't come off. Thompson saves the next set point too and eventually wins the game. Tie-break now.
6:05pm: On Centre Court, Angelique Kerber was looking comfortable with a 4-2 lead but Tatjana Maria breaks back and now it's level at 4-4 in the first set.
6:02pm: Britain's Harriet Dart wins her first ever Grand Slam main draw singles match, beating Christina McHale 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
6:00pm: Kei Nishikori is into the second round in two hours and ten minutes. He beats Thiago Monteiro 6-4, 7-6 (3), 6-4.
5:40pm: Alex de Minaur has cruised through in three sets against Marco Cecchinato, the 2017 French Open semifinalist. He wins 6-0, 6-4, 7-6. His compatriots Kyrgios and Thompson are 4-4 in the third set.
5:35pm: Centre Court action has begun! Defending champion Angelique Kerber takes on Tatjana Maria.
Court 1 also comes alive. World No.1 Ashleigh Barty is up against Saisai Zheng.
On Court 2, Dominic Thiem is in action against Sam Querrey.
5:24pm: Alison Van Uytvanck , who reached the fourth round last year, beats Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
5:15pm: Nick Kyrgios is having a medical timeout after the second set. He lost it 6-3 to Thompson. It's all level now.
The boundaries of the sport don't apply to Kyrgios. His country, Australia, is already through to the semifinals of the ICC World Cup. India is looking to follow, with a win against Bangladesh today. You can follow that match here .
4:50pm: And that's the match for Sloane Stephens . Bacsinsky put up a bit of a fight in the second set, but the American wins 6-2, 6-4.
Barbora Strycova is also through, beating 32nd seed Lesia Tsurenko 6-3, 6-2.
4:39pm: China's Wang Qiang , seeded 15th, makes it to the second round with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Vera Lapko.
4:30pm: A first win of the day. Elise Mertens is through to the next round, beating Fiona Ferro 6-2, 6-0 in under an hour.
And it took about the same time for the first set between Kyrgios and Thompson to end. Kyrgios takes the first set, after winning the tie-break. Thompson was serving for the set at 5-3.
4:17pm: Alex de Minaur is in cruise mode! The 20-year-old leads the second set against Cecchinato 3-0, after bageling him in the first.
4:09pm: Thompson was serving for the set, but Kyrgios breaks back and keeps the set alive. Kyrgios trails 4-5.
Royalty in attendance! Everyone comes to Wimbledon. Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, has dropped by and is watching the match between Britain's Harriet Dart and American Christina McHale on Court 14.
3:56pm: Jordan Thompson has broken Kyrgios in the first set and he leads 4-1 now.
3:49pm: Elise Mertens takes a 2-0 lead in the first set against Fiona Ferro. Ekaterina Alexandrova has broken Katerina Siniakova and leads 2-1 in the first set. Siniakova beat Naomi Osaka at Roland Garros.
3:38pm: Alex de Minaur and Marco Cecchinato have begun their match on Court 15. Meanwhile, we wait for the court three match between Nick Kyrgios and compatriot Jordan Thompson to start. Where there's Kyrgios, there's something to write about. Sloane Stephens is also about to get her match against Timea Bacsinsky underway on Court Two.
On this day in 2001, Roger Federer beat Pete Sampras in the fourth round. A five-set Wimbledon classic. That match was also the only time these two legends ever faced off in any ATP event. 2001 was also the year Goran Ivanisevic came into the tournament as a wildcard and won the men's singles title - the only player to have done that.

I don't know about you, but after what I saw yesterday, I'm not too excited for Day two of Wimbledon. Not because Day One was boring, but because it was exactly the opposite and I don't think today can match up to that - Upsets and more upsets.
When Naomi Osaka, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas fell one after the other at the first hurdle , the Nex Gen had taken a hit. But Gen Z+ (as I like to call it) stepped up, with 15-year-old American Cori Guaff beating one of her idols , Venus Williams, in straight sets. But she's not done yet. She's in for the long haul .
Having said all that, we have three giants of the game in action today and I shouldn't be writing the day off so easily. With Ashleigh Barty, Nick Kyrgios, Dominic Thiem, defending champion Angelique Kerber, Maria Sharapova, Dominic Thiem and more also in action, we have quite a lot to look forward to.
Roger Federer begins a bid for a ninth title at Wimbledon, after making his debut here 20 years ago. He turns 38 next month but he still looks as good as he has ever looked on a court. He's on Centre Court against Lloyd Harris after Tatjana Maria's match against Kerber.
Two-time champion Rafael Nadal, who Federer pipped to the second spot in the seedings here, doesn't get centre court action today. He begins his campaign on Court One against Yuichi Sugita.
Serena Williams, who could join Andy Murray in mixed doubles, is in centre court action against Italy’s Giulia Gatto-Monticone. Doesn't quite spell disaster for her, but she's looked rusty in the recent past and she could be vulnerable here.
