Para Athletics C’ship, Day 2: Six world records fall but no medals for India

On a night where the host nation Britain claimed five gold medals and six world records fell, the Indian hopefuls failed to make the podium finish on the day two of the World Para Athletics Championships in London.

 

In the men’s discus throw F37 final, India’s Arvind finished seventh with a 44.92m effort. Uzbekistan’s world record holder Kushniddin Norbekov took home the gold with a 54.73m throw. Australis’s Guy Henly and Iran’s Majidijamalabadi finsihed second and third respectively.

Karam Jyoti and Shatabdi Avasthi could only manage eight and ninth position in the women’s shot put F55 finals. Both women couldn’t better their personal best throws as they finished with 5.43m and 5.35m efforts. Latvia’s Diana Dadzite clinched the gold medal for an 8.01m throw.

Sunil Phogat was the other Indian contender involved on the day two of the championships in the men’s javelin throw F55 event. After the heroics of Gurjar Singh on the opening night in the F46 category, Phogat fell way below his personal best with a 23.75m. Milos Zaric of Serbia struck gold with a season best 30.83m throw.
