Spain Masters 2024: Sindhu, Sumeeth-Sikki pair reach round of 16; Srikanth, Manjunath knocked out

Two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu registered a comfortable 21-16, 21-12 win in half an hour over World No. 49 Wen Yu Zhang of Canada in the first round.

P V Sindhu progressed to the round of 16 of Spain Masters, a BWF World Tour Super 300 event, in Madrid on Wednesday.

Two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu registered a comfortable 21-16, 21-12 win in half an hour over World No. 49 Wen Yu Zhang of Canada in the first round. She will meet Chinese Taipei’s Huang Yu-Hsun next.

However, Ashmita Chaliha went down 13-21, 11-21 against former world champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand.

In men’s singles, Kiran George and qualifier Mithun Manjunath both lost to opponents from Chinese Taipei. While Kiran lost 8-21, 10-21 against Chia Hao Lee, Manjunath went down 11-21, 12-21 against Wang Tzu Wei.

Kidambi Srikanth too made a first-round exit, as he stumbled to an 18-21, 15-21 defeat to Japanese qualifier Koo Takahashi

Sathish Kumar Karunakaran suffered a 15-21, 19-21 defeat against Singapore’s Jia Heng Jason Teh, a qualifier. In mixed doubles, Sathish and his partner Aadya Variyath lost 18-21, 14-21 to Indonesian duo of Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Mentari.

Other Indian mixed doubles pair of B. Sumeerth Reddy and Sikki Reddy made it to the next round with a 16-21, 22-20, 21-14 victory over Chinese Taipei’s Chen Zhi Ray and Yang Ching Tun.
