Myntra celebrates cricket, the unofficial religion of India

"In India, Cricket is religion and the players, are Gods.” This is one statement we are almost sure to hear whenever we discuss cricket out here. Today, almost every single person of our country, irrespective of their social standing, upbringing and other defining factors loves cricket. From the roadside tea vendor to the CEO of the company sitting in the corner office, cricket is everywhere. Popular Fashion brand Myntra is celebrating the “True Colours” of the passion we know as cricket. They present an exciting mini-series with the same name which celebrates the diehard fans of cricket who have taken their fan following to an altogether new level.
These are people who consider cricket to be more than a religion or just another passion. For them, cricket is religion, life and much more. Take the case of Sudhir Chaudhary from Bihar. Sudhir considers cricketing legend to be his God and the Indian Tricolour as his identity. So much so that he gets himself painted in the tricolor before every match he attends. He once cycled 1800 kilometers to see one match where Sachin was playing! His devotion to the game has got him recognized worldwide and in 2011 he finally made his dream come true, by lifting the prized Cricket World Cup along right alongside his God, Tendulkar.
And then we have Col. Vembu Shankar (Retd.) of the Indian army. His passion has been collecting autographs of the Indian Cricketing greats. In fact, he’s so devoted to it, that he spent 2 decades to get autographs of the entire 1983 world cup winning team. Today, Col. Shankar considers the Indian Cricket fan Jersey as the next uniform after the one he wore as a member of the Indian Armed Forces.
With changing times, cricket has also changed forms and today we have a smaller, more exciting format we know as the T20, played and celebrated as the Indian Premier League or IPL. What has not changed is the passion associated with the sport. Take the case of Sarvanan Hari from Chennai. For him, the IPL team Chennai Superkings is what defines cricket. So much so that he spends 3-4 hours getting painted in the team colour Yellow for every match! Everything from his wardrobe to his two-wheeler are all celebrations of the colour yellow and his legend, Chennai Superkings Team Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
This fan following is not limited to a particular gender as well. Cricket in India enjoys a sizeable female fan following as well. Today, popular fashion brand Myntra is celebrating women in the field of cricket with an exciting short film series, rightly named, “Game Changers.” And this fan following only increased when we Mandira Bedi as the first ever female cricket presenter for the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup. The experience was exciting and riveting not only for Mandira herself but for many Indian women audiences as well. In fact, it will not be wrong to say, it was a ‘Game Changer’ by itself so to speak and Myntra is celebrating these women.
Today, the baton has been passed from Mandira to Mayanti Langer and others. But what has not changed is the true essence of cricket. Women have brought in a distinct colour to the game of cricket and this can be credited to a number of different aspects. The self-driven passion, their fashion statements and their own personas have made the entire experience much more compelling and inclusive at the same time.
