Top seed Dinara Saduakassova of Kazakhstan was held to a surprise draw by Iran's Mobina Alinasab in the second round of the World Junior Girls' Chess Championship at the KIIT University campus on Tuesday.

Iran’s top female player Sarasadat Khademalsharieh was supposed to be the top seed here, but she opted out citing busy schedule. Her compatriot Mobina Alinasab however ensured that top seed Saduakassova didn't have it easy by playing out a draw. It was one of the most surprising results of the day, with 224 Elo points separating the two.

That wasn’t the only game that didn’t go according to the script though. India's P.V. Nandidha turned the tables on seventh seed Anna Styazhkina of Russia while another Indian, Harshita Guddanti, held sixth seed Oliwia Kiolbasa of Poland to a draw.

Among the boys, the top two seeds made it two wins in a row. Russia’s Vladislav Artemiev defeated India's R. Pragnananda and American Jeffrey Xiong outwitted Christoph Menezes of Austria.

Little Nihal Sarin, a hugely promising kid from Kerala, did well to take half-a-point off the ninth seed Xu Yinglun of China.

“I could have pressed my rival further, but I was feeling tired,” said Nihal. “But I am fairly pleased with the draw against such a strong player.”
