India earned a silver through Pardeep Singh in the men’s 105kg category, as the weightlifting events of the XXI Commonwealth Games came to an end at the Carrara sports arena 1, here, on Monday.
However, the total haul of medals here — five gold, two silver and two bronze — was one which improved upon the country’s showing in Glasgow 2014. Over there, India had ended up being the table topper, but only with three gold, five silver and six bronze medals. In the current event, India was represented by 16 lifters, eight men and eight women.
There were four finals on the concluding day and even though India represented in all, only Pardeep Singh could make it to the podium, as he finished with a total of 352kg (152kg in snatch, 200kg in clean and jerk). The Indian lifter had his own failures in both the events. In snatch, he was unable to clear 152kg in his second attempt, before clearing it in the final try. This put him in the second place and again in clean and jerk, after clearing 200kg, Pardeep failed with his second and third attempts, which left him behind Sanele Mao (Samoa) who compiled a total of 360 kg. Owen Boxall (England) was third with 351kg.
