Hello and welcome to Sportstar’s Live coverage of the Bangladesh vs Afghanistan, Asia Cup 2022 Group B encounter at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Result: Afghanistan beats Bangladesh by 7 wickets - What a win for Afghanistan and it qualifies for the Super 4 stage. A brilliant 69-run partnership off just 33 deliveries between Najibullah Zadran and Ibrahim Zadran helped Afghanistan chase down 128 with seven wickets remaining. Bangladesh did fightback but the Najibullah and Ibrahim held their nerve with the former sealing the deal with a six!

Asia Cup 2022 points table: Afghanistan nears Super 4 spot; India leads Group A

AFG 102/3 after 17 overs: Zadran has almost snatched the game from Bangladesh as he hammers Mustafizur for a couple of maximums - one over the deep square leg boundary and the other a flat, meaty blow over long-off. 17 runs come from Mustafizur’s over and he has leaked 30 runs in his three over. In the last three overs 37 runs came and the dice is loaded in Afghanistan’s favour. The partnership between Zadran and Najibullah is 40 off 24 deliveries and they should seal the game for Afghanistan.

AFG 85/3 after 16 overs: Najibullah Zadran smokes one into the crowd and Afghanistan is back in the game as it now needs 43 runs in 24 deliveries. The required rate is still over 10 runs but Zadran holds the key as he is the set batsman out in the middle. Bangladesh needs wickets, Afghanistan some big hits.

AFG 65/3 after 14 overs: Dots, dots and more dots. Added to that Mohammad Nabi walks back to leave Afghanistan wobbling in the middle. This has been a fantastic fightback from Bangladesh defending a small total and with the crowd getting behind the team, Afghanistan is feeling the pressure. The boundaries have dried up and the required rate has climbed up to 10 an over.

AFG 57/2 after 12 overs: Mosaddek Hossain made the breakthrough by dismissing Hazratullah Zazai and Afghanistan now needs 74 runs in 54 deliveries. Ibrahim Zadran has dropped anchor with Mohammad Nabi in company. The required rate has climbed to 8.54 and the current run rate is 4.87. Afghanistan won’t like to press the panic button but it needs to find a way and get boundaries. Meanwhile, Shakib has bowled an excellent spell recording figures 4-0-13-1. What a spell from the skipper. Bangladesh still in the game.

AFG 37/1 after 8 overs: Hazratullah Zazai and Ibrahim Zadran are in the rebuilding process with a brisk 20-run partnership in 17 balls. The contest is fiery with Taskin Ahmed steaming in and Mosaddek Hossain operating from the other end. The asking rate is hovering just around seven runs per over and Afghanistan shouldn’t be too bothered. A partnership and a couple of good overs will place them in the driver’s seat.

AFG 19/1 after 5 overs: Shakib strikes and it was coming as the batsman wanted to release the pressure and break away from the shackles. Clever from the Bangladesh captain as he drags his length back and the ball stayed low as Gurbaz stepped out for a maximum. The ball sneaked in missing the batsman’s huge heave and Mushfiqur does the rest behind the stumps. Bangladesh is pumped up and the crowd is right behind the team. They believe a turnaround is possible defending 127.

AFG 2/0 after 1 over: Hazratullah Zazai and Rahmanullah Gurbaz start the run chase for Afghanistan and Bangladesh thought they had a wicket via a run-out but Zazai made it to the crease well in time to douse Bangladesh’s celebrations. Shakib starts well as he gives just two from his opening over but Bangladesh needs wickets to stay alive in the game.

BAN 127/7 after 20 overs: Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman shared six wickets among themselves as Afghanistan restricted Bangladesh to 127/7. Excellent effort from the spinners and Shakib Al Hasan’s decision to bat first might have backfired as the Bangladesh batsmen failed to negotiate with Rashid and Mujeeb. Mosaddek Hossain was the lone batsman who found some rhythm going and batted sensibly to lift Bangladesh’s spirits. Afghanistan will fancy to chase down the total and advance in the tournament. Back for the chase in a bit.

BAN 95/6 after 16 overs: Rashid Khan takes his third wicket and Bangladesh is crumbling in Sharjah. This time Mahmudullah goes for the slog but with the extra bounce and spin, he couldn’t get the distance as Ibrahim Zadran takes an excellent catch at deep mid-wicket. Zadran did well to keep his eyes on the ball and timed his dive well in time to pack off Mahmudullah.

BAN 79/5 after 14 overs: Mosaddek Hossain and Mahmudullah are rebuilding the innings but Afghanistan has kept the pressure on Bangladesh. Mujeeb completes his quota of four overs with excellent figures of 4-0-16-3. It was his three wickets upfront that changed the complexion of the match and broke the backbone of the Bangladesh top-order. Afghanistan will look to finish well and the last six overs will be crucial for both teams.

BAN 55/5 after 11 overs: Just when Bangladesh thought Mahmudullah and Afif Hossain arrested the slide, Rashid Khan dismissed Afif to leave Bangladesh five down. It was a terrible review by Afif as the ball was clearly hitting the stumps. Afghanistan is in complete control of the match and with not enough runs on the board, Bangladesh is in deep trouble. Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan are running through the overs and for Bangladesh, it will be Mahmukdullah who will hold the key.

BAN 35/4 after 8 overs: Afghanistan is dictating terms at the moment as Rashid Khan joins the party by dismissing the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim. The on-field umpire wasn’t convinced and Afghanistan rightly took the review to push Bangladesh further on the backfoot. Crashing leg is what the ball tracker showed and this is a massive moment in the game. Bangladesh needs not only a partnership but a cameo of sorts from one of their batsmen to bounce back.

BAN 28/3 after 6 overs: Mujeeb Ur Rahman is all over Bangladesh and he has picked three wickets with his bowling figures reading 3-0-9-3. Bangladesh batsmen seem clueless against the Afghanistan spinners and have paid the price of playing across the line. Afghanistan well and truly on top.

BAN 10/1 after 3 overs: Mujeeb Ur Rahman provides an early breakthrough for Afghanistan as he knocks out Mohammad Naim to put Bangladesh in trouble. Clever from the off-spinner as he slid a carrom ball that sneaked past the bat and pad to clatter the stumps. Out walks Shakib Al Hasan.

BAN 5/0 after 1 over: Mohammad Naim and Anamul Haque walk out to the middle with Fazalhaq Farooqi opening the bowling for Afghanistan. Naim is off the mark with a perfect straight drive while Haque is yet to open his account.

Bangladesh Playing XI: Mohammad Naim, Anamul Haque, Shakib Al Hasan(c), Afif Hossain, Mushfiqur Rahim(w), Mosaddek Hossain, Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman

Afghanistan Playing XI: Hazratullah Zazai, Rahmanullah Gurbaz(w), Ibrahim Zadran, Najibullah Zadran, Karim Janat, Mohammad Nabi(c), Rashid Khan, Azmatullah Omarzai, Naveen-ul-Haq, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Fazalhaq Farooqi

Shakib Al Hasan:We will bat first. It will be difficult for Afghanistan, so that is what we will look to do. We have three seamers and two spinners - so our bowling is pretty much covered. Afghanistan is a very good side in T20 format, we have prepared well for their bowlers hopefully we can show what we can do.

Mohammad Nabi: The way we played last game was brilliant, the morale of the team is high and we want to play the same way today. Same team today. Maybe it will be a bit low today, this pitch. We will look to keep them to a low total.

The Afghanistan players are warming up and they will be keen to keep the momentum after blowing away Sri Lanka.

It’s going to be a special occassion for Shakib Al Hasan who is set to play his 100th T20I match.

Bangladesh vs Afghanistan Preview

Afghanistan may have mauled Sri Lanka by eight wickets in its Asia Cup 2022 campaign opener. But Shakib Al Hasan’s Bangladesh will be determined to get itself off to a winning start when the two teams meet in a Group B encounter in Sharjah on Tuesday.

Fazalhaq Farooqi and Naveen-ul-Haq ran amok with the new ball against Sri Lanka before Afghanistan’s opening pair of Hazratullah Zazai and Rahmanullah Gurbaz sealed the 106-run chase with effortless ease. It was Afghanistan’s second-largest win in terms of balls remaining - 59. There’s no need for Afghanistan to change a winning combination, save for any last-minute injuries.

“We have prepared well, and we played a good game against Sri Lanka, but that’s gone,” star Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan said on the eve of the match.
