BCCI announces cash award for Indian women

Indian team members will receive Rs. 50 lakh each for their impressive performance in the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup.

India defeated heavyweight Australia by 36 runs on Thursday.

India’s team members will receive Rs. 50 lakh each for their performance in the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Saturday. India booked its spot in the World Cup final with an inspiring innings from Harmanpreet Kaur which propelled it past heavyweight Australia in the semifinal on Friday.

The support staff of the team will receive Rs. 25 lakh each, according to BCCI’s communique.

India will play the final against host England in the final on Sunday. A win in the final would give India its first ever World Cup crown - the team’s best performance in World Cups a place in the final in 2005.

C. K. Khanna, BCCI’s acting president, said, “The team has a good blend of young talent and experienced campaigners in Captain Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami. The all-round performance was on display in the semifinal against Australia women, who have won the World Cup six times. The fearless batting of Harmanpreet Kaur mirrors the team’s approach under pressure.”

Vinod Rai, chairman of the Committee of Administrators, said, “I am sure this team has inspired the next generation of cricketers and many more girls will take up the sport in the years to come.”
