Sourav Ganguly stable after undergoing angioplasty

Dr. Saroj Mondal, who leads the medical panel, says the BCCI chief will have to rest at home for at least three to four weeks after being discharged from the hospital.

Former India captain and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief Sourav Ganguly underwent an angioplasty in a private hospital in Kolkata on Saturday after suffering a heart attack.

The 48-year-old is ‘stable’, even though he will be kept under observation for the next 48 hours, before the panel of doctors take a call on the future course of action.

Sportstar from Kolkata, Dr. Saroj Mondal, who led the three-member medical panel, confirmed that Ganguly had a heart attack. “He was not a priorly known cardiac patient, but he experienced some discomfort in the chest (myocardial infarction) while doing the treadmill. He was rushed to the hospital and after ECG and other investigations, it was discovered that he had a minor heart attack,” Mondal said.

Members of the family have told this publication that Ganguly complained of dizziness after a workout session, and was rushed to the Woodlands Hospital at around 1 pm. It is understood that the former India captain was initially admitted to the emergency ward and put through investigations. In the afternoon, he underwent the angioplasty.

“He was diagnosed with three blocked coronary arteries after which the stent was inserted to remove the blockage,” Mondal said, adding that a decision on whether to implant more stents will be taken depending on his condition. “Our next medical board will decide on how we proceed further. But he is stable now.”

Rest for three-four weeks

Even though Ganguly is expected to be discharged from the hospital in the next four to five days, he will have to rest at home for at least three to four weeks. “Post discharge, he will be on rest for three-four weeks and his pump function is normal, so he should be able to resume work after that rest period,” Mondal said. “He has to take regular medication and follow up with the doctors regularly…”

Earlier, in a statement, Dr. Rupali Basu, MD & CEO at the hospital, stated that Ganguly had “family history of IHD ØE Ischemic heart disease.” But Mondal said, “this could have happened because of stress and also could be due to familiar factors…”

CM, Governor visit

While several West Bengal government ministers were present at the hospital, the Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, too paid a visit to Ganguly in the evening. “He is fine now and even spoke to me. I thank the hospital authority and the doctors here,” Banerjee said. The Governor of the State, Jagdeep Dhankhar, also visited the hospital and wished Ganguly a speedy recovery.

Fans and cricketers, meanwhile, have started wishing 'Dada' a speedy recovery.

India captain Virat Kohli too wished for Ganguly's speedy recovery.
