Ajinkya Rahane is all set to play a competitive match after more than three months. He will captain the West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy, which will be played in Chennai next month.
Rahane injured his hamstring in May during the Indian Premier League, and hasn’t played any competitive cricket since. Having missed the Ranji Trophy knockouts in June, he will be looking forward to score some runs.
Rahane is one of eight players from the Mumbai team to have been selected for West Zone. The others are: India regulars Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur; opener Yashasvi Jaiswal; and spin-bowling all-rounders Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian. Maharashtra’s Rahul Tripathi, who has been travelling as a part of India’s limited-overs setup for a better part of the last three months, has also been picked.
The squad was selected by the chief selectors of all the five State teams of West Zone in Mumbai on Thursday. Sportstar understands that they were informed that Priyank Panchal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sarfaraz Khan and Arzan Nagwaswalla were not to be considered since they will be a part of the India ‘A’ squad for the four-day games against New Zealand ‘A’.
The India ‘A’ series, starting September 1, will overlap with the Duleep Trophy. The BCCI is yet to announce the India ‘A’ squad.
