Afghanistan players involved in Manchester restaurant row

One of the Afghanistan players confronted one of the member of the public for being filmed which led to the police arriving

An unnamed Afghanistan player was involved in an altercation with one of the members of the public in a restaurant in Manchester.

Some members of the Afghanistan squad were allegedly involved in an altercation at a Manchester restaurant on Monday.

Though the team captain Gulbadin Naib refused to comment on the issue, saying he was not present at the hotel, the  BBC  reported that the Greater Manchester Police officers attended Akbar's restaurant in the city shortly after 23:15 BST.

However, no arrests were made. It has been learned that one of the players tok exception to being filmed and confronted a member of the public. 

Team manager, Naweeb Sayen, however, told  Sportstar  that they haven't heard anything about police complaint. "Nothing of that sort happened. The players just went for dinner. There was no altercation. All claims are baseless,"  Sayen said.

Meanwhile, the Greater Manchester Police issued a statement saying: “Shortly after 11.15pm on Monday 17 June 2019, police were called to reports of an altercation at a premises on Liverpool Road in Manchester.”

“Officers attended the scene. No one was injured and no arrests have been made. Enquiries are ongoing,” the statement said.

Afghanistan lost by 150 runs to England in their ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 match on Tuesday.
