The weather forecast for Wednesday does not look very promising. "Skies will often be cloudy through Wednesday, with further heavy showers at times. Some brighter interludes are possible between the showers though," according to reports.

According to the British Met department, the skies are likely to remain rather cloudy throughout Tuesday. There will be the risk of the odd light shower again.

The Indian national cricket team's match against New Zealand at Trent Bridge was the fourth match of World Cup 2019 to be abandoned so far, and the third to be called off without a ball being bowled.

This has already surpassed the previous highest number of washed-out matches in a World Cup - two in 1992 and 2003.

The World Meteorological Organization said 2019 was on track to be among the world’s hottest years, and that 2015-2019 would then be the hottest five-year period on record. Go figure!

 

This has been quite a world cup weather wise, hasn't it? Starting with incessant rains, across venues, playing spoilsport to experiencing near heat wave like conditions, the flippant English weather — much like the topsy turvy business end of World Cup 2019 — has caught many by surprise.

The 1992 and 2003 World Cups both saw two no-results. The 2019 edition has already had four. Reserve days became a bone of contention in the early half of the tournament. Here's what ICC chief executive David Richardson had to say: "Factoring in a reserve day for every match at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup would significantly increase the length of the tournament and practically would be extremely complex to deliver," Richardson said. "It would impact pitch preparation, team recovery and travel days, accommodation and venue availability, tournament staffing, volunteer and match officials availability, broadcast logistics and very importantly the spectators who in some instances have travelled hours to be at the game. There is also no guarantee that the reserve day would be free from rain either."

Did you know| The last World Cup to feature reserve days was the 2007 edition, in the West Indies, while they were also used the last time it was held in England, in 1999. Only two matches made use of it then; incidentally one of them was India, which eventually knocked England out.

Did you know| Before the marquee India vs Pakistan encounter, Manchester had not hosted a match since May 22, when Lancashire beat Worcestershire in a County Championship Division Two match. It had rained every day in the lead up to June 16 World Cup 2019 contest, forcing the pitch to stay under covers for the most part.

When are the reserve days? India vs New Zealand at Old Trafford – Wednesday 10th July England vs Australia at Edgbaston – Friday 12th July Final: at Lord’s – Monday 15th July The reserve day will be a continuation not a restart, assuming play commenced on the original match day. If no play was possible on the original planned match day, a full 50-over per team match will commence on the reserve day, weather permitting. A tied match will use a super over to determine the winner. What if no play is possible on the Reserve Day? If after the scheduled day and reserve day the semifinal match has still not reached a result, the higher-placed team from the league stage will progress to the final. If there is no play possible on either the originally schedule day of the final, nor the reserve day, the World Cup will be shared by the two finalist teams.

 

How does DLS work? With wet weather expected to affect Tuesday's semifinal match, the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method could come to feature prominently. When a match is interrupted by inclement weather, and one or both teams do not get their full quota of overs, an outcome has to be reached in the time available after resumption of play. What any calculation is doing is trying to adjust a target score according to the reduction in overs. Any number is an estimate: there is no one right answer. What the ICC has tried to do is arrive at a formula that takes into account as many parameters as possible and properly reflects the efforts of both teams. The DLS method, which has been updated a few times, is generally considered the most accurate system used in international cricket.
