Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer rattled the Australian top-order with the new ball. The England duo reduced the Aussies to 14 for 3 in 6.1 overs. Woakes ended the innings with figures of 3 for 20 in eight overs and Archer finished with 2 for 32 in 10 overs. Australia's in-form opening batsmen skipper Aaron Finch and David Warner were dismissed for 0 and 9 respectively.

Australia wicket-keeper Alex Carey heroicly batted on with a bandaged jaw after being hit by a Jofra Archer bouncer. He put up a 103-run fourth-wicket partnership with former captain Steven Smith to steady the innings for the defending champion. He ended with 46 runs off 70 balls with four fours.

England leg-spinner Adil Rashid removed Alex Carey, Marcus Stoinis and Pat Cummins to destroy any sort of momentum the Aussies were building. Rashid had figures of 3 for 54 in 10 overs and Australia was struggling to reach a respectable total at 166 for 7 in 37.4 overs when the 31-year-old spinner was in the attack.

Steven Smith scored 85 runs off 119 balls with six fours. He fought a lone battle for most of the innings as he guided Australia to 223. The five-time world champion was all-out in 49 overs after Smith was run-out due to a brilliant throw from England wicket-keeper Jos Buttler in the 48th over.

England openers Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy brought up their 11th century partnership in ODIs. They have eight more 50-run partnerships in 36 games together. Jason Roy scored 85 off 65 and Jonny Bairstow made 34 off 43 in a 124-run first-wicket partnership.

Austalia's left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc finally removed Bairstow in the 18th over, thereby claiming his 27th wicket in the tournament in the process. Starc now has the most wickets in a single edition of the ICC World Cup surpassing fellow countryman Glen Mcgrath's tally of 26 in 2007.

Jason Roy was controversially given out caught-behind in the 18th over. The umpire thought he had nicked a Pat Cummins ball to Carey but UltraEdge showed a flat line. Roy was visually upset and the umpires had to convince him to walk off as England's review was used up by Bairstow. Roy's innings of 85 included nine fours and five sixes.

England's test and limited-overs skippers Joe Root and Eoin Morgan completed the proceedings of the day as England beat Australia by eight wickets with 107 balls remaining. Root and Morgan were unbeaten on 49 and 45 respectively and had stitched together a partnership of 79 runs. With this victory, England reached its first ICC World Cup final in 27 years.
