Jason Roy made a 57-ball 66 and was involved in a 160-run partnership for the first wicket with Jonny Bairstow. He was severe on all the Indian bowlers except Jasprit Bumrah, using his bottom hand to access both sides of the wicket and piercing the infield during the first powerplay. Returning from injury after missing England's last three matches, Roy set the tone for the England innings with his shot-making ability and bottom-hand-dominant strokes that can upset the bowlers.

Ravindra Jadeja celebrates taking the catch to dismiss Jason Roy. On as a substitute for an injured K. L. Rahul, Jadeja proved his value to the team by taking an excellent catch on the long-on boundary to give India its first breakthrough. Surrey opening batsman Roy tried to loft Kuldeep Yadav over long-on but stepped out to the chinaman bowler, got too close to the ball and miscued his shot. The ball went flat and straight, dying on Jadeja as he began moving to his left to take the catch. The ball kept dying on him but the Saurashtra all-rounder judged the flight and dived forward to take a clean catch and held on to the ball.

Jonny Bairstow followed up his pre-match comments that the "critics" want England to lose, by hitting a century in a must-win match for the tournament host against an unbeaten India. Bairstow began shakily: he inside-edged Mohammed Shami a couple of times and was lucky not to drag the ball onto his stumps on both occasions. Once he got through the initial phase, against Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, he opened up and attacked Yuzvendra Chahal and Hardik Pandya. Bairstow fell for 111 off 109, Shami removing him with a cutter that the England opener hit down the throat of sweeper cover.

Rohit Sharma made his third century of the 2019 World Cup, becoming the fifth player in the history of the tournament to hit three centuries in one edition of the tournament. He was dropped on 4 by Joe Root and wasn't at his fluent best until he passed fifty, but he kept India in the hunt for a brief period during his 138-run partnership with captain Virat Kohli for the second wicket and later with Rishabh Pant. He was dismissed by Chris Woakes with a cutter that Rohit tried to muscle over the infield and got a thick outside edge through to wicketkeeper Jos Buttler.

Liam Plunkett tied down the Indian batsman by bowling the hard length and mixing up his space to exploit the pitch conditions. He removed Virat Kohli just when the Indian captain and his deputy, Rohit Sharma, had begun to accelerate the scoring after a slow start to the innings. He finished with three for 55, going on add the wickets of Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant to his tally.
