Ravindra Jadeja revived India's innings after it had been reduced to 92 for six with a 59-ball 77. He shared a 116-run partnership with M. S. Dhoni and took India to within striking distance of the target (240). He miscued a fuller-length delivery from Trent Boult and was caught by Kane Williamson at cover.

Matt Henry was named the man of the match for his spell of three for 37 in 10 overs. All of his wickets came in the first spell, during which he dismissed Rohit Sharma, K. L. Rahul and Dinesh Karthik to lay the foundation for a New Zealand win.

Martin Guptill ran out M. S. Dhoni with a direct hit to set up the 18-run win for New Zealand. Dhoni was trying to complete a second run, but from about 50 yards, Guptill hit the bull's eye with a flat throw, catching the former Indian captain short by a couple of inches.

James Neesham sealed the win for New Zealand with the wicket of Yuzvendra Chahal in the final over. India needed 23 runs off six balls and Neesham, with a cutter bowled on a length, induced an outside edge and Tom Latham took a clean catch behind the stumps.

Hardik Pandya, who walked in with India struggling at 25 for four, made 32 and was dismissed by Mitchell Santner. Pandya stitched a 47-run stand for the fifth wicket with Rishabh Pant and then added 21 runs with M. S. Dhoni for the sixth wicket before poor shot selection brought about his downfall.

Rishabh Pant sparked India's fightback after being reduced to 5 for three with a patient 32. Pant was caught at deep midwicket off the bowling of Mitchell Santner just when India was looking to shift gears after a tight opening 20 overs.
