ICC ODI World Cup: Oldest Players to score a WC century; Mahmudullah sixth after CWC 2023 hundred vs South Africa

Here are the oldest Players to score a century in an ODI Cricket World Cup match with Dilshan topping the list after scoring a century at the age of 38y 148d.

The Proteas continue to obliterate oppositions with their batting might as they register a 149-run win against the Tigers after thrashing England by 229 runs in their previous game at the same venue in Mumbai. The win today moves South Africa to the second spot on the points table and it has the best NRR in the tournament. The usual suspects delivered for South Africa with the bat. While Quinton de Kock slammed his third century of the tournament, Heinrich Klaasen ransacked 90 runs off 49 balls while Aiden Markram chipped in with a 69-ball 60 as South Africa posted an imposing 382 for five. Bangladesh’s challenge fizzled out very early and despite Mahmudullah’s valiant hundred, around which the tail also wagged a bit, the Tigers were always fighting a losing battle. FOUR! Short from Coetzee and pulled away crisply to the midwicket fence. Next ball is dug in even shorter and beats Mahmudullah’s pull this time. Mahmudullah swings and misses the next one in the channel outside off. Punched to point now for a dot ball. Pushed through covers for a single. One more for Mahmud to end the over.

Maharaj again. This one turns away sharply to beat Hasan’s outside edge. Three dots in a row to start the over. An outside edge now for Hasan and he collects a single at deep third. Mahmudullah punches this off the backfoot for a single at long-off and moves to 40 off 51 balls. Loud appeal for LBW and not given. But Maharaj insists on taking the review and Markram obliges. This is pitching outside leg and SA loses both reviews.

Coetzee continues. Two consecutive boundaries off Coetzee to start the over. OUT! Coetzee has the last laught as Nasum gets a top edge on the pull and taken by Coetzee off his own bowling. Hasan Mahmud the new man in. Two dot balls to end the over.

Maharaj continues. Nasum goes back and works this on-leg side. FOUR! This is too full outside off and driven down the ground for a boundary. FOUR! Mahmudullah now on the charge. He charges down the pitch and whips this over midwicket for another boundary. Shortish outside off and cut away for one more. Leading edge for Nasum and just a single through covers to end the over.

Short from Coetzee, Mahmudullah goes for the pull and the ball balloons into the hands of the point fielder. South Africa has reviewed this but the on-field umpire feels this has gone off helmet only. DRS confirms there is no bat involved. FOUR! Coetzee comes back. Full on off and driven back to the bowler. Fullish outside off, shaping away a touch and Mahmadullah swings and misses. FOUR! Angling down leg again and tickled to the fine-leg boundary by Mahmudullah. Three dots to end the over.

Maharaj flights this up and Mahmudullah defends solidly. Blocked again back to the bowler. Flighted on off and steered to short third with an open face. Mahmudullah now backs away outside leg to guide this for one through point. Tossed up again outside off to Nasum and he only manages to push it to mid-off. Another dot to end the over.

Williams again. Short of good length just outside off and punched off the back foot by Mahmudullah for a single. New man Nasum Ahmed is off the mark with a single as he flicks this full delivery on his legs behind square. FOUR! Down leg-side and Mahmudullah flicks this behind for an easy boundary. Rabada again. Full on the pads and flicked for a single by Mahmudullah behind square. Litton pulls for a single before Mahmudullah guides late to deep third for one more. OUT! LBW appeal and given! Litton goes up for the review but this looks plum. Technology confirms the ball was crashing into leg-stump and Litton has to go.

Only nine South African players sweated it out in the nets on Monday, but Aiden Markram - who stood in as a captain in its previous game against England - indicated that there was no question of taking the foot off the pedal when his side squares off against Bangladesh in the World Cup.

A superlative performance against the defending champion has certainly boosted South Africa’s confidence.

But as it waits on clarity over the availability of its regular captain Temba Bavuma, it is cautious of a formidable Bangladesh line-up, boosted by the likely presence of captain Shakib Al Hasan.

After missing out on the last league game against India, Shakib batted for long in the nets. But he insisted that he will make himself available for the must-win game if he feels ‘comfortable’ while running and clears the fitness test.
