IND 265/8 in 50 overs: Ngidi caps off an incredible round of death bowling with a six-run over. Shardul brings up his maiden ODI fifty off the last ball of the match.
IND 259/8 in 49 overs: Five singles and a dot come off the last Shamsi over. India needs 38 off six balls.
IND 254/8 in 48 overs: Two back-to-back boundaries for Shardul - a slap through extra cover first followed by a thick edge that carries to the third man area. And a six over square leg! Thakur would want to believe India is still in the game.
IND 237/8 in 47 overs: Cannot even begin to imagine what is going on in Shardul's head right now. He is looking to take the strike after every delivery but he hasn't been able to middle properly yet. And a run out opportunity goes abegging as Shamsi loses sight of the ball.
IND 230/8 in 46 overs: A wild, one-handed swing from Bumrah sees the ball disappear into the fence.
IND 224/8 in 45 overs: The frustration is writ large on Shardul's face as he doesn't manage to connect. Shamsi goes for a run a ball.
IND 218/8 in 44 overs: Jansen bowls a wide. Good stop by Ngidi at mid-on to deny a boundary to Bumrah.
IND 214/8 in 43 overs: Shamsi is in. Maybe the last roll of the dice for the visitor, this. Bhuvneshwar chips one straight to Bavuma at mid-wicket. Muted celebrations from South Africa. Bumrah takes strike. A wicket maiden.
IND 214/7 in 42 overs: Bhuvneshwar gets off strike off the very first ball of the over. Thakur fends off a vicious yorker to pick a single. Shamsi is warming up near the ropes. Maybe, he will be bowling the next. Shardul will be licking his lips. Miller drops a dolly at short cover! Would have been Jansen's first ODI wicket. My, oh, my...
IND 211/7 in 41 overs: Flicked around the corner again by Shardul. Welcome boundary for India. Slightly overpitched and Shardul unleashes a glorious cover drive to add four runs to the scoreboard.
IND 203/7 in 40 overs: Ngidi strays wide; it is the ninth extra of this innings. Only three runs come from this over.
IND 200/7 in 39 overs: Boundary rider Jansen continues to impress. Another slide followed by a one-handed stop prevents the ball from making the ropes. The ball keeps low and Ashwin has dragged it onto the sticks! An almost impossible task, this, for India now. Bhuvneshwar gets off the mark with a single off the third ball he faces. Also, in turn, brings up the 200 for India.
IND 197/6 in 38 overs: Shardul gets away with a lucky boundary. Was angled into the pads and he just helped it on its way to the fence. India needs 100 off 72 balls.
IND 190/6 in 37 overs: Even-stevens! South Africa too had scored 190 after 37 overs. However, it had lost only three wickets.
IND 188/6 in 36 overs: SA was 181/3 at this point in the game, compared to India's 186/5. Ngidi gets an official warning for running on the danger area of the wicket. A short-pitched delivery sees the back of Venkatesh, who holes out to van der Dussen at deep square leg.
IND 185/5 in 35 overs: Stumped! Electric stuff, this, from de Kock. Pant departs. Ashwin walks in.
IND 181/4 in 34 overs: Pant strolls across to the other end after an audacious pull off Ngidi's bowling. And gone! Shreyas walks back. Gets a feather off the glove on the way through to de Kock. Time for drinks.
IND 177/3 in 33 overs: Phehlukwayo to bowl his first over. A misfield allows Pant and Shreyas to sneak a single. Bowled too straight and Shreyas has glanced one towards backward square leg.
IND 168/3 in 32 overs: Pant welcomes Jansen back into the attack with a glorious straight drive for four.
IND 160/3 in 31 overs: Jansen does a splendid job in the deep to save three runs. Bavuma drops Pant on 6. It was hit so hard that the ball burst through the SA skipper's fingers.
IND 156/3 in 30 overs: Jansen replaces Maharaj with two new batters at the crease. The lanky pacer will look to do some damage before either of them settles down. Just three runs off that over.
IND 153/3 in 29 overs: Jinxed it... Shamsi strikes! Kohli's gone just when things were looking to go smoothly for India. Loops it up to Bavuma at mid-wicket. Shreyas makes his way into the middle.
IND 152/2 in 28 overs: Maharaj to bowl out. Kohli gets his fifty. Will we finally get to see his 71st ton?
IND 146/2 in 27 overs: Shamsi to continue. A lot of field changes being made for the aggressive 'keeper-batter. Kohli and Pant keep the scoreboard ticking with the singles and the quick 2s. Kohli is batting on 48.
IND 140/2 in 26 overs: Looks like Bavuma wants Maharaj to bowl through. This is his ninth over on the trot. And he gets Dhawan for 79! The ball turns back sharply into the left-handed batter off the footmarks to make a mess of the woodwork. Pant comes to the crease.
IND 137/1 in 25 overs: FOUR! Short and Kohli goes back in his crease and whips this loose ball behind square for a boundary. Dances down the wicket this time and chips this just short of deep mid wicket for a single. Down leg from Shamsi and a deft nudge by Kohli will fetch him a single behind.
IND 129/1 in 24 overs: Dhawan and Kohli continue to toy with the spinners, squeezing out the singles off Maharaj with ease.
IND 125/1 in 23 overs: Shamsi starts off with a wide down leg again. An imperious slog sweep by Kohli but Jansen in the deep keeps it to just two runs. Kohli sweeps again, dragging this one from outside off to deep mid wicket for two more.
IND 117/1 in 22 overs: Kohli goes down the wicket and thumps it over the bowler to collect a couple.
IND 113/1 in 21 overs: Tabraiz Shami into the attack. First one goes down leg for a WIDE! Kohli flicks to square leg with a forward press and keeps it to a single. Pulled away by Dhawan but just two runs at mid wicket. FOUR! Dhawan swept and it looped up off the edge but landed in the vacant area behind square leg to run away to the boundary. Dhawan guides it past point with open face for a single.
IND 104/1 in 20 overs: Just two singles from Maharaj's over after the break.
DRINKS - INDIA 102/1 IN 19 OVERS, NEEDS 195 RUNS TO WIN
IND 102/1 in 19 overs: A couple for Dhawan off Ngidi with a slash past point. FOUR! A slower one, Dhawan waits and chips it over cover and to the boundary. 100 up for India.
IND 94/1 in 18 overs: The singles keep trickling for the duo. Maharaj pitches it up too full around the toes and both set batters flick the ball around to eke out the runs.
IND 90/1 in 17 overs: FOUR! Golden wrists! A Kohli-esque flick, slightly uppish, but into the gap between cover and mid on.
IND 83/1 in 16 overs: Kohli and Dhawan seem comfortable with the pace of the innings at this moment. Just three runs from Maharaj's over. The bowlers really seem to be lacking bite.
IND 80/1 in 15 overs: The batters continue to deal in singles. Ngidi strays on Dhawan's pads and he flicks it off his hips for a couple at fine leg.
IND 74/1 in 14 overs: Dhawan and Kohli nudge Maharaj for easy singles. Dhawan takes a quick one off the last ball to bring up his 34th ODI half-century off 51 balls.
IND 70/1 in 13 overs: Ngidi into the attack. Goes across to Dhawan, over the wicket, and beats his outside edge on the drive. Steers to point for a single off the backfoot and moves to 48. Kohli steals one behind square to keep strike.
IND 67/1 in 12 overs: Maharaj's gets Dhawan's outside edge and it runs away past the keeper to the boundary. An unfortunate way to end a good over. Maharaj pegged Dhawan back by dragging his length back a bit and also turned one into him to rap him on the pads.
IND 60/1 in 11 overs: Four singles and a wide down leg side off Markram's over.
IND 55/1 in 10 overs: Maharaj into the attack. FOUR! Going down leg and Dhawan slaps it behind for a boundary. Kohli defends solidly from the other end with a forward press. End of Powerplay.
IND 50/1 in 9 overs: OUT! Rahul edges behind off Markram. It was a length ball outside off and Rahul got beaten for the lack of turn. KL Rahul c Quinton de Kock b Aiden Markram 12(17b 0x4 0x6).FOUR! Kohli goes deep in his crease and punishes this short one with an imperious pull behind square.
IND 44/0 in 8 overs:FOUR! Dhawan sits on top of the bounce and almost jabs on the leg to find the square leg boudary. FOUR! Extra bounce and outside off and he rises with it to slash it over cover for another boundary. He moves to 33 of 33 with that.
IND 35/0 in 7 overs: Rahul looks to break loose, steps out to Markram but only gets a single at deep mid wicket. Close! He looked to heave this one on the leg but didn't get to the pitch and it went off his inside edge for a three runs at fine leg. Two more singles on the leg side to end the over. India is cruising at this moment.
IND 28/0 in 6 overs: Beaten! Jansen rolls his fingers, puts the pace off the ball and nips it into Dhawan to beat his inside edge. FOUR! Sprayed on the pads and Dhawan tucks it off his toes to the mid wicket boundary. Edged! A faint inside edge but goes to de Kock on the bounce.
IND 24/0 in 5 overs:FOUR! Dhawan dances down the wicket to take Markram's length ball as a half-volley and chips it over mid on for a boundary. Good start for India and the pitch seems to have eased out a bit.
IND 18/0 in 4 overs: Jansen strays on the pads and Dhawan flicks it for two behind square. FOUR! A delectable push through covers by Dhawan as Jansen pitches it up on off stump. Dhawan pulls a bouncer on the leg to fine leg for a couple more.
IND 10/0 in 3 overs: A couple of singles and a brace from the Markram over. Rahul took a risky single and the fielder at mid off threw a wild one over the keeper to concede an extra on the overthrow.
IND 6/0 in 2 overs: Debutant Jansen from the other end. Width outside off on a length and Dhawan guides it to point for a dot. This one is in the channel and left alone. Width again on a length and Dhawan slashes that hard but a stunning stop at point. FOUR! Lucky for Dhawan! It nipped into him and raced to the fine leg fence off a thick inside edge.
IND 2/0 in 1 over: Markram's spin will get proceedings underway. Markram to Rahul from over the wicket. Full on middle and leg and Rahul tucks it for a single and India is off the mark straighaway. Straight and full and Dhawan defends on the front foot. He is off the mark with a single to mid on off his toes.
18:24 IST : India openers KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan make their way to the middle in the quest for 297 runs. This will be Rahul's first innings as ODI captain while Dhawan will look to cement his position in the XI.
Stay tuned! The live commentary begins shortly...
TARGET: India needs 297 runs to win from 50 overs at 5.94 RPO.
SOUTH AFRICA INNINGS
SA 296/4 in 50 overs: Shardul offers a gift to the Proteas - a free hit. Bowls a wide and the free hit holds. This is really poor bowling from the CSK pacer. And van der Dussen connects. A huge six brings up his highest score in ODIs. He moves on to 124* (93). van der Dussen finds the gap again. It'll be a four.
SA 279/4 in 49 overs: Bavuma holes out to Rahul at long-on. The 204-run stand finally comes to an end. Miller comes to the crease and gets off the mark with a single straightaway.
SA 272/3 in 48 overs: van der Dussen gets to his hundred with a single off 83 balls. Bhuvneshwar bowls a wide and it only gets worse for India the next ball as van der Dussen hits a six to carry on on his merry way.
SA 259/3 in 47 overs: Bumrah gets it right into the blockhole to leave Bavuma flummoxed. van der Dussen, on 98, is on strike.
SA 255/3 in 46 overs: Electrolytes on the field. It is a hot day. Vital to keep oneself hydrated. Bavuma gets his right hand stretched. The 250 comes up for South Africa as van der Dussen moves within three runs of his hundred.
SA 245/3 in 45 overs: Skipper Bavuma gets to his second ODI hundred. What a splendid knock this has been. Led the way and laid the foundation for his team. van der Dussen joins the celebrations with a glorious drive through cover for four. This is now the highest fourth-wicket partnership for South Africa against India in ODIs.
SA 239/3 in 44 overs: Five runs come from the Ashwin over. With a single, Bavuma moves on to 99*.
SA 234/3 in 43 overs: There is a brief stoppage in play as van der Dussen breaks his bat and calls for a new one. van der Dussen makes it look so easy... flicks Shardul for a maximum over deep backward square. Follows it up with a four to end the over.
SA 222/3 in 42 overs: Bavuma and van der Dussen do not take any unnecessary risks, resorting only to the singles and doubles.
SA 216/3 in 41 overs: Bavuma and van der Dussen have been excellent between the wickets. They are easily converting the 1s into 2s. The mid-off has been called in and oops... Thakur bowls a wide over Bavuma's head.
SA 210/3 in 40 overs: van der Dussen sits back, waits and hammers Ashwin towards extra cover to register four runs.
SA 203/3 in 39 overs: The 200 comes up for the host as Bavuma picks up a couple, nudging one towards the fine-leg region. Yet another misfield and overthrow. We have had quite a few of them today.
SA 198/3 in 38 overs: Ashwin returns. Makes you wonder when or if at all Rahul would utilise his sixth bowling option in Venkatesh... Rahul had himself mentioned in the pre-match press conference yesterday that a sixth bowler is a very vital feature of white-ball cricket nowadays. Eight runs from the over.
SA 190/3 in 37 overs: Bowled short and wide outside off, van der Dussen utilises the extra room and upper-cuts. Four more.
SA 182/3 in 36 overs: Chahal to bowl out. Kohli hurts his finger while fielding at short cover. Bavuma and Kohli exchange a few words after the former India captain unleashes a fiery throw towards the batter. 10-0-53-0 are Chahal's final figures.
SA 181/3 in 35 overs: Bonus runs for South Africa and the fifty comes up for van der Dussen as well. Bavuma gets into a fantastic position and launches a ferocious pull over deep mid-wicket for four. Wide next; it is only getting worse for the visitor.
SA 169/3 in 34 overs: Beautiful drift and turn from Chahal to start off the over. Shamsi and Maharaj, in the South African camp, will be licking their lips at the sight of that. A diving effort by Venkatesh in the deep prevents the ball from running to the fence. The 100-run stand comes up, only the second time Bavuma and van der Dussen have done it.
SA 163/3 in 33 overs: Bhuvneshwar starts off with a wide. Leaves van der Dussen thinking with a knuckle ball on the fourth stump line next.
SA 155/3 in 32 overs: The umpire, after taking a lengthy look, hands Dhawan the benefit of the doubt as he dives and saves two runs in front of the ropes.
SA 151/3 in 31 overs: Bhuvneshwar is back into the attack. The 150 comes up for the Proteas, in the meantime. The partnership is up to 83 off 82 balls now. Time for a drink.
SA 148/3 in 30 overs: A crafty shot by Bavuma. With the fielder stationed much squarer, the SA captain gets down on one knee to paddle one round the corner. Four runs.
SA 141/3 in 29 overs: Has become imperative to break this partnership now. Will Bumrah be able to do the job? Off the edge... and four. A well-directed bouncer, this, well outside the off stump and van der Dussen's top edge, while trying to effect the pull shot, was too high for Pant to get his fingers to.
SA 133/3 in 28 overs: Bavuma brings up his fifty off 76 balls, his third in ODIs. Thakur brings fine leg up into the ring but angles one into the pads. van der Dussen pick up four runs.
SA 126/3 in 27 overs: Dhawan's superhuman effort in the deep saves two runs. Bumrah is hitting the deck hard to trouble Bavuma.
SA 123/3 in 26 overs: Shardul taking the pace off the ball quite brilliantly at the moment as Bavuma and van der Dussen continue to deal in singles. A little surprising as to why Venkatesh Iyer, India's sixth bowling option hasn't been brought in yet.
SA 118/3 in 25 overs: FOUR! Bavuma this time sweeps a full one from Chahal to the square leg fence. FOUR! This one is too full outside off and Bavuma digs this along the ground and through the covers. A single off the last ball with a dab at point. Fifty-run partnership up.
SA 109/3 in 24 overs: Thakur back with the ball. Almost chopped on! He got it to jag back into vd Dussen who inside-edged it on the drive and almost onto his stumps. NO-BALL! in hindsight, it wouldn't have mattered as Thakur has overstepped. SIX! Another full-toss from Thakur on the freehit and vd Dussen launches this over deep mid wicket for a maximum. Thakur correct his length, dragging it back and keeping it onto the stumps. Two singles to end the over. Bavuma cops a nasty one on his shoulder at the non-striker's end as he scurries for a single.
SA 100/3 in 23 overs: FOUR! Another sweep by vd Dussen off Chahal and another boundary. Reached out for the straight one with a giant stride and got on one knee to deposit it to the deep mid wicket fence. Another sweep but some good work from Bhuvi keeps it to a couple. A single off the last ball as vd Dussen sweeps yet again. Hundred up for South Africa.
SA 92/3 in 22 overs: A deft paddle sweep by Bavuma for a couple behind the keeper. Drives the next one straight off the backfoot for one more. Edged and chance! Ashwin lures vd Dussen with a full one on off and he drives and gets a thick edge that bounces off Pant's gloves. A single for him on the off side to end the over.
SA 86/3 in 21 overs: FOUR! vd Dussen gets down on one knee and sweeps a full one from Chahal to the square leg boundary. Came in with the angle into him and a thick inside edge for a quick single.
SA 80/3 in 20 overs: Bavuma chipped this one from Ashwin into the air and just short of Kohli at mid on. Two more singles. WIDE! Ashwin strays in line and goes down leg. Ashwin gets one to turn sharply into vd Dussen and rap him high above the pad.
SA 76/3 in 19 overs: Chahal to vd Dussen the new batter. He is offered a gift on off stump and he drives it straight to mid on for a dot. FOUR! Reverse-sweeps it to deep point as Chahal pitches it up on the legs. A thick edge this time runs past the slip for two more.
SA 70/3 in 18 overs: A couple of singles to start the over. Markram drove a fuller one from Ashwin on the stump to mid off and tries to steal one. OUT! That was too risky and Venkatesh effects a direct hit at the non-striker's end. Aiden Markram run out (Venkatesh Iyer) 4(11b 0x4 0x6). A couple for Bavuma through mid wicket off the backfoot.
SA 66/2 in 17 overs: A great over by Chahal. He had Markram very uncomfortable there. Got one to drift away from him on a length and beat his outside edge.
SA 65/2 in 16 overs: Ashwin to continue after the break. OUT! Bowled him! It skidded into de Kock with the angle, kept low and he missed it trying to make room on the off and cut. Quinton de Kock b Ravichandran Ashwin 27(41b 2x4 0x6). Markram is the new man in. Three easy singles as Ashwin floats it up on off. FOUR! Bavuma steps out and drives the a full one on off through covers.
DRINKS BREAK - SOUTH AFRICA 58/1 IN 15 OVERS
SA 58/1 in 15 overs: More spin as Chahal comes on from the other end. Very full from Chahal and the batters collect four easy singles. The next one is slightly more flighted and de Kock presses forward to defend. A single for de Kock at cover to end the over.
SA 53/1 in 14 overs: Ashwin to de Kock from round the wicket. Just a single from the over. Ashwin keeps it on and around off to Bavuma, who gets a leading edge on one that keeps its line before missing a paddle sweep. A direct-hit on the last ball at non-striker's end has Ashwin interested by TV replay confirms de Kock was in by a country mile.
SA 52/1 in 13 overs: Tidy maiden over from Thakur. He keeps Bavuma quiet with a straight line on a good length. Gets the last one to move away a bit outside off and beats Bavuma's attempted drive.
SA 52/1 in 12 overs: Ashwin into the attack. Goes full on de Kock's toes first ball and he tucks it to square leg for a single. Another single for Bavuma off the backfoot at square leg. Dropped! de Kock went for a lusty heave outside off and edged it to backward point, where Shreyas Iyer misses the catch diving to his left; a couple of runs for him. Ashwin keeps it a touch too full and two easy singles to end the over.
SA 46/1 in 11 overs: FOUR! Thakur feeds de Kock a full one outside off and he latches onto it with a uppish drive over mid on and to the boundary. Misses a cheeky ramp shot, the ball lands in front of him and de Kock steals a single. Two more singles to end the over. Thakur keeps it on the stumps after that first loose ball.
SA 39/1 in 10 overs: Bhuvi to continue from the other end. Bavuma looks to break the shackles as he steps out and launches it to deep mid wicket. But the slowness of the pitch means it stops short of the boundary and Bavuma collects a couple. A single for Bavuma at backward point. Bhuvi is handed a warning for running in the danger area. A risky single for de Kock at mid on. De Kock fends the last one to Bhuvi. End of powerplay!
SA 35/1 in 9 overs: First change in bowling as Shardul Thakur replaces Bumrah. First one is very wide outside off and Bavuma goes for a expansive drive but almost chops on as it goes off his inside edge; just a single at fine leg. Wide down leg and Pant thinks de Kock has got some bat on it. Just as Rahul contemplates a review the umpire signals a NO-BALL! de Kock hands a catch straight to mid on on a full-toss off the free hit. Driven straight down the ground but Thakur gets a hand to it to keep it to a single. Some serious lack of pace on the wicket here. Bavuma has to shimmy down the pitch to flick it to square leg for one.
SA 31/1 in 8 overs: Bavuma scurries for another single at mid off after gently tapping Bhuvi. de Kock tucks a fuller one on the legs to fine leg for one more. Bavuma trickles another one to mid off for a quick single. de Kock drives into the ground and it goes behind the bowler for a couple.
SA 26/1 in 7 overs: Bumrah to bowl his fourth. de Kock clips it to fine leg for a single. Bumrah pins Bavuma back with an unerring line that comes on a length. A skiddy almost knocks Bavuma's stumps over as he goes back and defends. A quick single for him off the last ball at mid off.
SA 24/1 in 6 overs: Bhuvi gets it to move again and beat de Kock outside edge. A little too straight this time and de Kock tucks it fine for a single. Jagged into Bavuma and he is lucky to get an inside edge onto his pads. Edged and taken behind but Pant is not sure if that went straight into his gloves or it hit the ground. Soft signal is not out and umpires go upstairs. The ball has clearly bounced in front of the gloves and Bavuma survives.
SA 23/1 in 5 overs: Bumrah angles the first one away from Malan and he is beaten with some low bounce. OUT! Similar line and length and Malan gets a feather on it as Pant pouches it behind. Janneman Malan c Rishabh Pant b Jasprit Bumrah 6(10b 1x4 0x6). Skipper Bavuma the new man in. A thick edge as he pokes outside and it goes to second slip on the bounce. This one slides down leg but Bavuma is beaten for some late in-swing. FOUR! Bavuma drives beautifully through the covers and to the boundary.
SA 19/0 in 4 overs: FOUR! Length just outside off from Bhuvi and Malan cuts and Venkatesh Iyer lets it through his legs at backward point. Some awkward bounce seems to have deceived him. Bhuvi keeps it straighter on a length and Malan defends three balls. A thick outside edge and a single for him at third man.
SA 14/0 in 3 overs: Bumrah continues. Malan to face his first ball. Angles it into him from a length on the first couple of balls and Malan defends it back. He is off the mark with a single to third man. Angled across from de Kock and he leaves. FOUR! Serenely through covers as Bumrah offers width outside off.
SA 9/0 in 2 overs: Bhuvneshwar from the other end. A couple off the first ball with a well-timed drive through covers. Swing! Pitched on a length and Bhuvi got it to move away from de Kock's outside edge. WIDE! This one goes down leg side. Stifled LBW appeal and turned down! It nipped into de Kock from a length and rammed into his back pad. Height an issue there. Two dots to end the over.
SA 6/0 in 1 over : Bumrah to de Kock over the wicket. A couple of dots to start with as Bumrah goes full on the legs. WIDE ! Strays down leg. FOUR LEG-BYES ! Loose ball on the legs and it brushes off de Kock's pads to run away to the boundary. A couple of dots later Bumrah goes for a full-toss and de Kock misqueues it to fine leg for a single. Messy first over.
