Hetmyer led Windies' run chase with a brilliant innings.

That's a comprehensive win for the West Indies.  They beat India by eight wickets. Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer's centuries helped the Windies dominate the host. For India, the failure of the top order ultimately came back to haunt it.

100 comes up for Hope with a cracking boundary. What an innings this has been. Played the role of an anchor to perfection before flexing his muscles. Windies now just a few big hits away from going 1-0 up. WI 244/2 after 43 Overs.

Hope has anchored the innings to perfection. Shout for lbw, turned down by the on-field umpire. India reviews but replays show the ball missing the stumps.

WI 240/2 after 42 Overs. West Indies needs 48 runs in 48 balls

OUT! Redemption for Shreyas Iyer as he holds on to this one: Hetmyer's innings comes to an end and what an innings this has been. He falls for 139, Shami with the breakthrough. Nicholas Pooran comes to the crease. WI 229/2 after 38.4 Overs.

Hetmyer is going after Jadeja. Two back-to-back maximums and the Windies are running away with the chase. The 200-run stand comes up with a single off Dube. Hetmyer is running away with this game: targets Dube with a six and a four now. He is striking them at 130.10. West Indies need 65 runs in 72 balls

DROPPED ! Shreyas Iyer drops a sitter and India's poor catching continues in the one-day internationals. Hetmyer celebrates the reprieve with a boundary off the next ball. 10 runs off that Chahar over. West Indies needs 97 runs in 90 balls. WI 191/1 after 35 Overs.

He gets to his 100, does Hetmyer with a single off Kuldeep. His fifth international hundred this, and what a time to get one!  West Indies needs 110 runs in 17 Overs.

Hope brings up his fifty now. Terrific innings. The partnership too is worth 150. Windies are cruising at the moment. WI 161/1 after 30 Overs.

Hetmyer sails into the eighties with a cracking boundary through backward point. And into the nineties with a thunderous wallop for six. 10 shy of a brilliant 100! WI 149/1 after 26 Overs.

Hetmyer switching gears, goes after Jadeja with two back-to-back maximums. India needs a wicket, badly. He has hit five fours and three sixes so far. He has able company in Shai Hope, who is batting on 34 off 69 balls. WI 113/1 after 22 Overs.

50 up for Hetmyer. Brilliant knock from the left-hander. He needs to convert this into a 100. A run-a-ball fifty. Windies needs 191 to win. WI 97/1 after 21 Overs.

Hetmyer is growing in confidence, collecting one big shot off every over: the last being a humongous six off Kuldeep. The partnership between the two is now 68 off 65 balls. West Indies needs 209 runs. WI 79/1 after 15 Overs.

Kuldeep Yadav and Shivam Dube have been introduced into the attack. West Indies needs 257 runs with nine wickets in hand. Kuldeep and Dube going for four and five runs respectively. WI 36/1 after 10 Overs.

Scratch that. Deepak Chahar gets Amris out lbw and India have drawn first blood. Shimron Hetmyer comes to the crease... Meanwhile, Shami continues to go for runs: Hetmyer this time getting two boundaries, albeit in streaky fashion. WI 21/1 after 6 Overs .

Ambris collects two boundaries off Shami. Steady start for the Windies. They haven't lost a wicket and the Indian pacers haven't let the openers off the hook. Exciting contest on the cards. WI 11/0 after 4 Overs.

Shai Hope and Sunil Ambris begin the run chase. Deepak Chahar and Mohammed Shami with the new ball.

====================

Nine runs coming off the final over. India finishes on 287/8 at the end of 50 overs. Pant and Iyer stand out players with their fifties. Jadhav and Jadeja giving the final impetus. West Indies needs 288 to win.

GONE ! Jadhav departs, Pollard completes a simple chance at long-on. Shivam Dube joins Jadeja. GONE! Jadeja has been found short of his crease but not without a touch of drama. The on-field umpire didn't ask for a replay but Kieron Pollard, having watched the replay on the big screen, asked the umpire to review the decision. The correct decision has been made but how long can the umpires wait before going for the review. Contentious call. ... Apparently the replay wasn't shown on the big screen before the umpires went upstairs. Chahar joins Dube.

Jadeja brings up the fifty partnership with a boundary off the last ball of the 46th. Jadhav carves the first delivery of the 47th for four more. Runs coming thick and fast for the host. IND 264/5 after 46.2 Overs.

Jadhav showing his inventiveness with the bat: two boundaries off Joseph take India closer to 250 with six overs to go. IND 245/5 after 44 Overs.

Jadhav and Jadeja have added 24 for the sixth wicket so far. Plenty of yes and nos between the two batsmen while running between the wickets. Seven overs to go, India will eye the 280-290-mark. Jadhav and Jaddu know a thing or two about the Chepauk surface, having played for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

Pant perishes trying to up the ante. He falls for 71. Two set batsmen are now back in the dressing room. IND 210/5 after 39.4 Overs. Ravindra Jadeja joins Jadhav.

Kedar Jadhav joins Pant in the middle. India goes past the 200-run mark and with Pant still in the middle, India will be eyeing a big flourish at the death.

OUT! Iyer holes out against the run of play. A tame dismissal. He falls for 70 as Joseph grabs his second wicket of the match. IND 194/4 after 36.4 Overs.

15 Overs to go. DROPPED! Cottrell drops a sitter and Pant gets a life. West Indies, after a disciplined start, have been poor in the field.

Pant is in the zone now as he lofts its over the bowler's head for four. Iyer follows it up with a boundary to backward square-leg to bring up the 100-run stand.

Shreyas Iyer brings up his fifty with a single. He has reached his half-century off 70 balls. A well-crafted knock this from Iyer. Pant gets to a fifty. This will do a world of good to the youngster's confidence. IND 165/3 after 33 Overs.

The partnership between the two is 67 off 78 balls. That's come at a fairly quick pace given the nature of this surface. Pant showing glimpses of why the team management has stuck with him.

Pollard is off the field. Shai Hope is the stand-in captain. Keemo Paul is being taken apart here. Needs to get his radar right, else a batsman of Pant's quality will make him pay. IND 147/3 after 31 Overs.

The partnership between Iyer and Pant is now fifty. Iyer is nearing his half-century while Pant has engaged in some mature shot-making, while going after the odd loose delivery. IND 137/3 after 30 Overs.

Pant clips one to backward square-leg for his first boundary as India goes past 100. IND 104/3 after 25 Overs.

SHOT! Iyer plays a delectable cut shot for four. He is growing in confidence, is Iyer. India would hope he converts this start into a big score.

Rishabh Pant joins Shreyas Iyer in the middle. With Rohit, Rahul and Kohli gone, it's a great opportunity for the middle and lower-middle order to show its mettle.

GONE! Alzarri Joseph gets the big fish: Rohit goes for an attempted pull shot but finds the fielder. Joseph, into his second, over has got a major breakthrough. IND 80/3 after 18.1 Overs.

The fifty stand comes up between Rohit and Iyer. A typical 50-over game this, so far. The slowness of the pitch and some disciplined bowling from the visitor have forced the Indian batsmen to exercise restraint in shot selection: to their credit, they've done a good job.

INDIA - 68 for 2 after 15 overs. WHAT A BALL! Keemo Paul is clearly frustrating the Indian batsmen with his slower ones. LS in commentary just said the ball was bowled on Christmas and it reached the batsman during New Year. HAHA!

Walsh continues. And he is greeted with a full toss on off stump. FOUR! Rohit sweeps a ball that had to be punished to the fence. ANOTHER BOUNDARY! This time it's Shreyas. He was a bit lucky there. It was an edge which raised off to the boundary. A single to end the over and 10 runs came off it.

Keemo Paul will bowl his first over now. No pace and bounce whatsover. Rohit is getting a bit frustrated here. He hands the strike back to Shreyas with a single to third man. SHOT! The fielder at sweeper stops the ball with a dive to limit it to two runs.

FOUR BYES! A full toss from Walsh Jr and both the batsman (Rohit) and the keeper (Shai Hope) missed the ball as it heads towards the boundary. Walsh is tossing the ball up nicely here. BOUNDARY! Rohit cuts the ball to backward point and finds the fence. Eight runs from that over.

Jason Holder continues. A loud shout for LBW first up but nothing given and no review taken either. FOUR! Another great shot from Shreyas who times a straight drive to perfection. INDIA - 46/2 in 12 overs. A 21-runs partnership built here.

Hayden Walsh Jr comes into the attack and Shreyas Iyer welcomes him with a boundary. The leg spinner gave the batsman a little too much room on the offside as he executed a perfect cut. Two more singles were taken in that over.

Aravind: Sheldon Cottrell is bowling a little gem of a spell here. First K.L. Rahul and then the Indian skipper Virat Kohli. Clever bowling by the West Indies pacers and Cottrell, in particular, is taking the pace off the delivery on a slow pitch. Golden opportunity for Shreyas Iyer to make a strong case.

FOUR! Half-volley from Holder and Rohit drives it towards the straight boundary with ease. Another four-run over form Holders. India is at 33/2 in 10 overs.

Another Cottrell over incoming! Third maiden from the Windies quick! Shreyas Iyer defends all six balls. Both Cottrell and Holder are hardly giving the Indian batsmen any room on the offside to work on in an already slow pitch.

Rohit is struggling against Holder here. India is clearly in trouble. ANOTHER INSIDE EDGE! But it goes past the boundary rope. Lucky run for Rohit and India here. That could have rattled the stumps some other day. Four runs came of that over.

Shreyas Iyer is the new man in! Two Mumbaikars in the middle now. INDIA - 25 for 2 after seven overs.

Beautiful shot! Virat Kohli is in ladies and gentlemen. It was an uppish drive and Virat Kohli timed the ball to perfection despite it not coming onto the bat properly. DOUBLE STRIKE FROM COTTRELL!!! Virat Kohli is out! Inside edge and onto the stumps. The lack of pace got the better of the Indian skipper. Kohli was trying to cut the ball after the slip was moved away and he failed miserably. Brilliant captaincy from Pollard!

Cottrell to bowl his fourth over. WICKET! Rahul is making the long walk back to the pavilion. Back of a length ball from Cottrell and Rahul went for the flick. He got a bit cramped for room as Shimron Hetmyer completed the catch after a top edge.

A good over from Holder fetches two runs for India. India moves to 19/0 after the first six overs.

Cottrell is bowling a number of slower balls here, especially the off-cutters. First runs off the bowling of Cottrell. Rohit with a double followed by a four in consecutive balls. He executed a straight drive to get the two and came up with a premeditated pull to seal the boundary.

What a shot! Rohit with a beautiful cover drive. He was expecting the fuller delivery from Holder and he got what he wanted. He came down the track and guided the ball to the boundary. A wide to follow that drive. India is at 11/0 in 4 overs.

Dead ball! Holder looks to have taken a wrong step while bowling and he just twisted his ankle. Nothing serious though. He heads back to bowl the delivery.

This is a slow wicket in Chennai today. The ball is not coming onto the bat that well. The Indian batsmen need to generate some power, to go along with decent timing, to get the ball away. And we have another maiden from Cottrell

Wonderful cut from Rahul as he finds the boundary in the second over to get India off the mark. After a maiden to begin the innings, India is now at 5/0 in 2 overs.

Cottrell bowls a maiden first up. Jason Holder will share the new ball with him.

Oh dear, nearly a run-out at the non-striker's end. KL Rahul takes off for a non-existent single on Rohit's insistence at first, but rightly sent back aand he just about makes it, does Rahul.

Right then. The national anthems are done. Out walk KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma. We are all set for ball one of the three-match ODI series. The Windies team in a huddle. Sheldon Cottrell with the new ball.

TOSS UPDATE: Kieron Pollard has won the toss and decided to field first.

Kedar Jadhav is back into the playing XI. Shreyas Iyer will bat at 4, and with Dhawan missing out, KL will open the innnings with Rohit. Kohli to occupy the No. 3 position. On paper and going by their form, this is an intimidating batting line-up and the Windies will have to bowl out of their skin to restrict them to an achievable total.

West Indies (Playing XI): Shai Hope(w), Sunil Ambris, Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran, Roston Chase, Kieron Pollard(c), Jason Holder, Keemo Paul, Hayden Walsh, Alzarri Joseph, Sheldon Cottrell

India (Playing XI): Lokesh Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli(c), Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant(w), Kedar Jadhav, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Deepak Chahar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami

Virat Kohli: Very happy to bat first. It looks like a dry track. And we would have batted first anyway. A decent total on the board would put us in a strong position. In 50 overs, it's not easy to hit throughout the game, strike rotation is important and that's where our bowling attack becomes lethal. West Indies are a dangerous side and we can't take them lightly. The guys who are not playing are Manish Pandey, Mayank Agarwal, Chahal and Shardul Thakur.

Kieron Pollard: We will field first. This pitch is bit of an unknown so we will see how it behaves. We are gonna back our decision. We are looking forward to this challenge. Everytime we play cricket, we wanna play as hard as we can. We have done a lot of talking on how we want to approach certain situations. We want to be competitive. Evin is missing out, we want to give him rest. King is out and Khary Pierre is out too.

Aravind: It's bright and hot out here in Chepauk after two days of rain and the atmosphere is slowly building up...  Both teams are warming up with the Indians indulging in fielding drills... The pitch looks dry after being under covers for almost 48 hours... Toss in a while
