WHAT THEY SAID
Devon Conway: It was about keeping it simple, trying to formulate a game plan. I am just really happy to build the partnership with Rutu(raj); two times it has gone past the 100 mark. I have to be true to be myself, try to be positive up front. I have got to give credit to MS.
MS Dhoni: This really helps. We could done this early. I don't know how many times we have in positions where we can say we had the perfect game. The ball stops a bit in the second half also. It gets better after the 13th-14th over. Runs on the board really help. Big-hitters, once they get going, it is difficult to stop them. Simarjeet and Mukesh have taken time to mature. What is good to see is they have the capability. They have the game sense, which is very important.
Rishabh Pant : They outplayed us in all the departments. The only thing we look forward to is the next three games. If we win them, we should qualify. There are Covid cases, stomach infections... a lot going on but these cannot be excuses. We need to be in a good frame of mind.
RESULT: CHENNAI SUPER KINGS WIN BY 91 RUNS |
DELHI CAPITALS INNINGS
DC 117 in 18 overs: Thakur begins proceedings with two fours on the trot. And he has nicked one down leg side as Dhoni takes a superb diving catch. Bravo gets one. GAME. SET. MATCH. Khaleel's gone off the very next ball. A slower yorker is enough to sneak under his blade and rattle the woodwork.
DC 109/8 in 17 overs: Thakur frees his arms to finally whack a maximum over long-on.
DC 102/8 in 16 overs: The easiest of takes for Uthappa at gully. Kuldeep's struggle finally comes to an end as Simarjeet picks up his second wicket. The strategic timeout has been taken. Nortje in the middle. Wide. Meanwhile, another run out chance goes abegging. Uthappa misses the mark with a throw from cover point.
DC 99/7 in 15 overs: A missed run out opportunity! Theekshana fails to whip the bails off at the non-striker's end as a throw comes in from midwicket. The batter was nowhere in the frame.
DC 94/7 in 14 overs: Moeen to bowl out. He sticks to the right channels to finish with impressive figures of 4-0-13-3.
DC 91/7 in 13 overs: Wide. Too high from Bravo. Five off that over.
DC 86/7 in 12 overs: Moeen concedes only a run off this over. Kuldeep and Thakur seem clueless at the crease.
DC 85/7 in 11 overs: The wickets are falling in a heap now. There is a little bit of movement off the surface and Choudhary hits the sticks. Axar's gone. Powell follows his mate back to the hut; he's being caught behind. Delhi is seven down.
DC 82/5 in 10 overs: Chopped on! The Delhi skipper departs. Moeen 2/2. And another! Moeen gets Ripal to pick out Conway after hitting a six off the second ball he faces.
DC 75/3 in 9 overs: Theekshana bowls a tidy over. Just two runs off it.
DC 73/3 in 8 overs: Time for some off-spin. Moeen to bowl his first over. Gaikwad pouches one at the very edge of the rope at long-on as Marsh perishes. Powell is in.
Time for the strategic timeout.
DC 71/2 in 7 overs: Bravo replaces Theekshana. Starts off with a cutter and Marsh has pummelled him to the shorter boundary. Through cover... Marsh picks the gap again with ease. Four!
DC 59/2 in 6 overs: Marsh lofts a drive. It's travelled the distance. Six to get the over underway. Pant closes the over with a boundary to deep square leg.
DC 48/2 in 5 overs: Warner greets Theekshana with a four over cover. Gone! Umpire Nitin Menon raises the finger. Warner immediately goes upstairs to review the call. Tries to go for the reverse sweep, misses and the ball strikes him high on the back thigh. Umpire's call prevails. The burly Aussie is livid. Pant, who comes to the crease, warms himself up with three boundaries on the spin.
DC 32/1 in 4 overs: Simarjeet to continue. He keeps things tight to conceded only four off the over.
DC 28/1 in 3 overs: Marsh leans in and creams Mukesh's first ball through cover. Warner goes all the way! Rocks back and pulls for a six.
DC 17/1 in 2 overs: Simarjeet to share the new ball. Bharat gets off the mark with two back-to-back fours. There is a confident appeal for LBW off the third ball but the umpire isn't too interested. Simarjeet strikes! Bharat departs. Tries to take on the pacer with the pull, but ends up edging one to Moeen in the slip.
DC 8/0 in 1 over: A bit of swing on offer. Warner plays and misses. There's a bit of yes and no but the openers are safe. Warner finishes the over with a six. This was top-edged but all's well that ends well.
Warner and Bharat open the batting. Mukesh to get things rolling for CSK.
TARGET: DELHI CAPITALS NEED 209 TO WIN |
CHENNAI SUPER KINGS INNINGS
CSK 208/6 in 20 overs: A four to start the over. Moeen digs the yorker out and the edge has run down to the rope. Warner settles comfortably underneath. Moeen departs, looking to slice a fuller delivery outside off. Two in two! A golden duck for Uthappa as substitute fielder Nagarkoti takes a fine catch. Nortje is on a hat-trick. Fails to get one as Bravo nudges one to cover to pick up a single. Two vintage uber-quick doubles from Dhoni to end the innings.
CSK 199/4 in 19 overs: Rayudu finds the boundary. Khaleel takes the pace off but Rayudu slashes hard. Wicket! Khaleel sets him up with the slower, shorter ball. Rayudu slices again but this one balloons to Axar at point. Khaleel welcomes Moeen with a bouncer. The England all-rounder swerve-pulls this into the fence. Wide again. Khaleel shouldn't be trying to do anything different now. Dhoni has pumped one past a diving Warner. SIX.
CSK 183/3 in 18 overs: Dube holes out to Warner. The loud cheers make it evident who is on the way to the middle. 6, 4 - Dhoni has Navi Mumbai on its feet. Marsh, under pressure, bowls a wide - too high and down leg.
CSK 170/2 in 17 overs: A direct hit would've seen Conway walk. Dube calls for a quick single. Khaleel runs halfway across the track, picks the ball up, throws but misses. The relief, however, is shortlived as Conway swerves in an attempt to execute a cheeky shot but ends up feathering one to Pant.
CSK 167/1 in 16 overs: Thakur starts with an off-cutter that strays wide of off. Dropped! Dube has been allowed a reprieve. Skies one and Axar has made a mess of it at mid-off. A 96m maximum... Dube has well and truly joined the celebrations! Another six... A half-volley has been clobbered over long-off. The fifty partnership is up. One bounce and into the fence. The onslaught continues.
CSK 148/1 in 15 overs: With ample wickets in hands, the Chennai batters must look to go all out against Delhi now. Gaikwad's dismissal has brought down the scoring rate, albeit only by a bit. Dube pulls a short ball through midwicket. Four!
CSK 140/1 in 14 overs: Marsh strays off the tramline. Pant wears a wry smile as the ump signals a wide. And another wide. Same area. Dube looks to scythe this one but misses all of it.
Strategic timeout.
CSK 131/1 in 13 overs: Kuldeep has been brought on from the other end. There are two left-handed batters in the middle and it would be difficult for them to target the longer boundary. Conway, however, doesn't mind. He dances down the track and hammers a six over long-on.
CSK 122/1 in 12 overs: Effortlessly cut away for four. Conway is well and truly headed towards the big 100. Marsh has been put under pressure straightaway. 2+2... Unlucky. A direct hit ricochets off the stumps to gift the batters an additional couple of runs.
CSK 110/1 in 11 overs: Nortje has been welcomed with a boundary yet again. Gaikwad plinks this over mid-off. Slashed... and slashed hard! Gaikwad has been given ample room to work with and it will be another four through point. Wicket! Gaikwad departs. 152kph, short and the Maharashtra batter looking to pull another into the stands, miscues.
CSK 100/0 in 10 overs: Kuldeep looks to pitch on the tramline. Conway premeditates the move to whip this over extra cover. Two more fours. Conway is making batting look so ridiculously easy. 16 comes off that over. Kuldeep's economy reads 17.00 tonight.
CSK 84/0 in 9 overs: Axar concedes five singles. Conway reaches his third fifty on the trot off 27 balls.
CSK 79/0 in 8 overs: Kuldeep comes into the attack. Pant drops a difficult chance as the spinner's slider takes a piece of Gaikwad's blade. 6, 6, 4 - Conway annihilates Kuldeep to end the over on a high.
Strategic timeout!
CSK 61/0 in 7 overs: Axar finds his rhythm line and this time. Conway and Gaikwad exchange strike with a couple o of singles. A tad shorter from Axar and Conway sweeps the ball down to square-leg for a single.
CSK 56/0 in 6 overs: Shardul begins with a wide delivery. A couple of singles to follow. Width on offer and Gaikwad lofts the ball over cover for four. Shardul hits the slot and Gaikwad elegantly pumps the ball over the bowler for six.
CSK 43/0 in 5 overs: Axar into the attack. Ruturaj charges down the wicket and drags the ball to deep mid-wicket for a single. Axar loops one in and this time Conway dances down the track to loft the ball all the way over the fence for six. There goes another. Axar fends short and Conway advances quickly to loft the ball over mid-wicket for another six.
CSK 29/0 in 4 overs: Khaleel continues. Conway nudges the ball down to mid-on and gets a single. Another single to follow. Short ball from Khaleel and Conway nearly pulls it on the full to square-leg. Excellent over from Khaleel as he constricts the batters to a string of singles.
CSK 24/0 in 3 overs: Gaikwad explodes... shimmies down and welcomes Nortje with a delightful maximum over the shorter boundary. Nortje oversteps; this has not been the best of seasons for the speedster. Four... Bowled into the pads and Conway has clipped it fine.
CSK 9/0 in 2 overs: A slip in place for Khaleel, who will be bowling over the wicket to the right-handed Gaikwad. Starts off with a wide down leg. The pair takes three singles.
CSK 5/0 in 1 over: Gaikwad gets off the mark with a single to short third man. Conway, however, seems to be in the mood tonight. He gets his first runs courtesy of a boundary to midwicket. That shaped in and the Kiwi does well to flick it through the gap on the leg-side.
Gaikwad and Conway are back to get things underway for the Chennai Super Kings. Delhi Capitals' Shardul will open the bowling.

Rishabh Pant: We want to chase. The season has been up and down. It is going to be a good match. I have learnt a lot from MS Dhoni. Let's see how I execute them. Two changes for us. KS Bharat comes in for Mandeep and Axar Patel is in for Lalit Yadav.

CSK vs DC PITCH REPORT
"One side of the boundary is 64 meters and the other is 78 meters. There was a lot more grass last week. The wicket is still going to be a belter. But it may be a little bit slower and a bit spin-orientated. Couple of weeks back there was dew but not so much over the last week," reckons Kevin Pietersen.

CSK vs DC MATCH PREVIEW
A tussle against an unsettled opponent in Chennai Super Kings on Sunday offers Delhi Capitals a great chance to string two wins in a row for the first time this season to make a decisive push for a spot in the playoffs.
Although Super Kings still remain in the hunt for the playoffs despite seven losses in 10 matches, the chances of making it are slim.
The Capitals will be buoyed by their recent win against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Sunrisers were a tough opponent and the result was attained despite a lacklustre performance from Kuldeep Yadav. Kuldeep, who is second in the list of top wicket-takers this season, has become a talisman of sorts for his team – the contest against Lucknow Super Giants on April 7 was the only other occasion when the Capitals won despite a relatively dull performance from the left-arm spinner.

The other bowler to shine this season has been fast bowler Khaleel Ahmed, who stepped up against the Sunrisers to enable his team to cross the line in a nip-and-tuck battle. If Kuldeep and Khaleel are both on song – as they were against the Knight Riders on April 10 – or if Kuldeep and fellow left-arm spinner Axar Patel perform well – as they did against Punjab Kings on April 20 – a big win is likely.
Kuldeep will be in business on Sunday at the DY Patil Stadium as the pitches here may be two-paced and the grass covering uneven. Going by the last few matches played at this venue, expect another low-scoring affair.
The Capitals have been effective as a batting group, too, without many batters dominating the run charts. David Warner has made it to the top five after a determined 92 this week, but there have been small but important contributions from Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Rovman Powell and Axar.
According to Stephen Fleming, the head coach, the Super Kings have been poor in all facets of the game this season. In the recent past, however, their performances have been good. They are paying the price for a lightweight bowling attack – that seemed to be the major difference between a victory and a defeat in the previous game against the Royal Challengers.
On Sunday, the team management will expect more from Ravindra Jadeja and M. Theekshana, the two major spinners in their line-up. It will be a bonus if fast bowler Mukesh Choudhary has a field day, as he had at the same venue on April 21 against Mumbai Indians.
The batting has started to become more reliable; Ambati Rayudu and Ruturaj Gaikwad are now starting to show their prowess. But the bowling has to step up against the Capitals to enable a complete performance and a much-needed win.
