Mathews’ return to captaincy, it is believed, has got to do with his equation with Hathurusingha, who had worked with Mathews between 2008 and 2010.

Sri Lanka has re-appointed Angelo Mathews as its limited-overs captain. This comes in less than six months after he resigned from the position.

At a time when Sri Lanka is looking to bounce back under its new coach Chandika Hathurusingha, Mathews is expected to stick around till the World Cup in 2019.

Dinesh Chandimal, meanwhile, has been retained as the Test captain and has also regained a place in the ODI squad.

Mathews’ return to captaincy, it is believed, has got to do with his equation with Hathurusingha, who had worked with Mathews between 2008 and 2010. First as coach of Sri Lanka A team, and then as the shadow coach of the national team. He had then earmarked Mathews for a long international career.
