Former India spinner, Ramesh Powar, has applied for the role of coach of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy team. The position was vacant after another Mumbai stalwart, Sameer Dighe, quit the role after being at the helm for just a year.
“What you have heard is right. I have indeed applied for the coaching role,” Powar confirmed to Sportstar .
The 40-year-old Powar has featured in two Tests and 31 ODIs for India. He has been one of the longest serving members of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy, and Powar wants to use his vast experience in the new role.
Recently, he was in Australia to attend a spin coaching camp with the bowlers there.
“It was a good experience. I was there for a couple of weeks and it was good helping out the spinners there,” Powar, who was earlier the spin bowling coach of the MCA’s Indoor Cricket Academy, said.
After spending years in Mumbai, Powar had shifted to Rajasthan in 2013, but that move did not work too well as he signed up for Gujarat the following year.
After the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) invited applications for the positions of coach for the Ranji Trophy team and also coach for its U-19 team, there were speculations that former India pacer, Abey Kuruvilla, and former India batsman Pravin Amre have applied for the role.
But talking to this publication, Kuruvilla refuted such claims. It is also learnt that even Amre has not applied for the job. Interestingly, Tuesday was the last day for submitting applications.
The MCA will shortlist candidates and call them for interviews and presentation.
It is further learnt that the interviews and the presentation will be conducted by the Cricket Improvement Committee of the MCA on July 6.
