World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev on Wednesday expressed his desire for a proper on-field farewell for Yuvraj Singh, who announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Monday.
Yuvraj, in his farewell press conference, had said that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had promised him a farewell match, provided he failed the yo-yo test. However, the 37-year-old southpaw cleared the fitness test, despite claiming in his farewell address that his performance was to be the criteria for selection to the Indian team.
“I think I would love to see a player like him getting a farewell in the ground, not just saying I’m retired,” said Kapil.
"Yuvraj will be in my all-time XI whenever I sit down to make my team, the way he played his cricket. The way he is looked up to, what he has gone through in his life (beating cancer). I wish him even better than what he achieved on the cricket field, we need more players like him," said the former India captain at the launch of fantasy sports platform ‘Apne11’ .
Kapil, who joked he always ends up on the losing side when playing fantasy cricket with his grandchildren, is working on a 'mammoth' task of picking his all-time World XI.
“I don't want to be dropping any legend of the game.”
