Speaking to Sportstar over phone, Ashique said, “I am very happy and excited that such a big club has decided to sign me.”

He is looking forward to the stint in Spain. “It’s a big club, and I am looking forward to the great facilities and also working with international coaches. I will also get to practise with some big players; I will try and make the maximum use of it.”

Adapting to foreign conditions has been a major worry for Indian players who train abroad. But Ashique said it is important for all professional footballers to adapt. “In football, it’s important as everywhere there will be different coaches, different conditions and different team, I will do my best,” he said. “At the Pune academy, I have learnt how professional footballers outside India play. The Spanish coaches have helped me.”

Ashique hasn’t set any long-term goals for now, and is just looking forward to his Villarreal stint, “I just want to do well with Villarreal and hope to stay there for a long time.”
