Hello and welcome to Sportstar’s HIGHLIGHTS of the Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona La Liga match at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Barcelona has done it. The win is complete, the three points in its bag. The second half was frantic as Atletico pushed for a leveller. Barcelona suffered but dug in and kept its 12th clean sheet of the season. Dembele’s first half goal was enough to seal the win. Credit to ter Stegen as well. The German denied the Atletico frontline on multiple occasions. Savic and Ferran were sent off in the closing minutes as the game intensified. Griezmann perhaps had the best chance for the home team but was denied by Araujo on the goal line. Not his night, not his team’s night. Barcelona move to the top of La Liga with 41 points, three clear of rivals and second-placed Real Madrid. Diego Simeone’s side has now been pushed out of the Champions League places over the weekend by Real Betis.
Griezmann takes the free kick but the Barcelona wall does its job and deflects the ball over the top. ter Stegen lets out a massive roar after his goal is kept safe.
Atletico gets a free kick from right on the edge of the penalty area as Roberto handles the ball.
CLEARED OFF THE LINE! Araujo with a massive save for Barcelona! He blocks Griezmann’s shot from close range.
Savic and Ferran have been sent off! Madness at the Wanda Metropolitano. They were fighting for the ball one minute and tearing each other out the next. A proper wrestling brawl. The referee takes no time to spot the incident and swiftly flashes the red card to both players.
Morata goes down in the penalty area and the referee clearly sees the dive. Lucky that Morata did not get a booking for that.
Six minutes of injury time as Atletico throws the kitchen sink to find an equaliser.
Lemar’s long range effort goes wide. Reguilon is upset with that as he was free in acres of space on the left flank.
Raphinha is booked for time wasting. He demands the medical team for a head injury but referee is not having it.
Atletico breaks out on a counter attack but the cross from the left wing is too long for Morata in the middle. Llorente fouls Raphinha and the attack comes to an end.
Christensen is booked for bringing down Kondogbia. Griezmann takes the set piece but it yields nothing for the home team.
More changes on both sides
Atletico Madrid: IN - Reguilon | OUT - Gimenez
Barcelona: IN - Roberto, Alonso | OUT - Balde, Busquets
Correa is shown a yellow card for kicking a ball in the direction of the assistant referee. He was frustrated after he was unable to keep the ball in play on the right touchline.
Raphinha’s shot is blocked by Molina and Barcelona gets a corner.
Balde is trying to clear the ball when he loses footing. This allows Griezmann to pounce and shoot. He, perhaps in a hurry, skies it over the goal.
Changes for both teams
Atletico Madrid: IN - Correa, Lemar | OUT - Felix, Koke
Barcelona: IN - Raphinha | OUT - Gavi
Mandava miscues a clearance and the ball goes out for a corner. Pedri takes it from right and the ball lands with Ferran who scored but is ruled OFFSIDE!
Dembele’s shot goes wide after Barcelona broke out on a counter attack.
An attack in the very first minute Kondogbia walks on. The ball goes to Llorente in the Barcelona penalty area but the shot is saved by ter Stegen!
Substitutions for Atletico Madrid
IN - Kondogbia, Morata | OUT - Barrios, Carrasco
Dembele escapes when offered space and takes a shot. The ball takes a deflection and goes out for a corner. Busquets heads the set piece but off target.
A sustained spell of possession culminates in Dembele driving in with the ball from the right. He goes down on the edge of the penalty area but the referee sees no foul. Gavi then comes in with a tackle to give a free kick to Atletico.
Two changes for Barcelona
IN - Kessie, Ferran | OUT - de Jong, Fati
Araujo is booked for a tackle on Koke. He seems to get the ball first but the follow through lands on the midfielder.
Griezmann misses! Atletico continues to knock on the door. This time Molina crosses from the right and Griezmann meets it on the half volley.
Felix strides along with the ball for a good 20 metres before deciding to shoot. The ball is nowhere near the target and goes flying into the stands.
Griezmann gets the ball in the final third and tries to move it forward but Araujo stops him from doing that with a vital interception.
Atletico gets possession from the centre circle and it attacks from the word go. Balde fights near the corner flag and helps Barcelona move out of danger.
The players are returning for the second half.
Atletico fans boo as the players walk off the pitch. They’re not happy with the officials. Xavi would be breathing easy knowing his team goes into the break with a lead intact. Atletico really aggressed in the last minutes of the half and Barcelona has to thank its custodian for the clean sheet remaining in place. The visiting team has had chances to attack but have not managed to test Oblak much. Dembele’s goal was the only shot on target and that was what gave Barcelona the lead. Nicely set for the second half.
Molina’s shot goes wide! Yet again Molina decides to take a shot from the right side. The ball stays along the ground this time but is off target. That is the last action of the first half.
Just a minute of stoppage time added on.
SAVE by ter Stegen! That’s a blinder! Unbelievable. Carrasco cuts in from the left and plays a ball into the centre. Felix lets the ball roll from front of him to let it onto Griezmann’s feet. Griezmann takes the shot and ter Stegen flies across to prevent it from going in.
Felix plays a through ball for Carrasco on the left wing but Balde does not give up the chase. He stays right at the ball and slides to clear it.
The away team has had more of the ball - 68 per cent to home team’s 32 per cent.
Molina goes for glory and misses. Gimenez finds a piercing pass to the right back who is off on his wheels. He decides to take a shot from long range and the effort soars over the cross bar.
Carrasco tries to work a way in from the left flank but the cross is blocked and the ball touches the Belgian last before rolling out of play. Barcelona gets a goal kick.
Gimenez header goes wide! That looked like going into the back of the net. Atletico gets a couple of set pieces and it finally lands a proper cross. The Uruguayan is unmarked as he towers into the air. The shot bounces on the grass and looks set to creep into the right corner until it goes agonisingly wide.
Llorente’s shot goes wide! It gets a deflection so Atletico wins a corner. There’s a VAR check for handball but Araujo’s arm was tucked right into his body and play resumes.
PEDRI! Oh he misses a 1v1 chance! Fati plays a disguised through ball for him and he tries to chip it but Molina sweeps in to block. Corner for Barcelona.

Atletico wins a corner! An attack on the right wing and Kounde has to clear the ball to avoid the danger.
Barcelona controls the ball for well over a minute until Kounde’s pass to Gavi on the right wing goes long.
Dembele is too slow to react and a ball that is getting to him in the home team’s penalty area is intercepted by Llorente.
SAVE by Oblak! Christensen takes a long range effort and Oblak dives to his left to save it.
Barrios shot saved by ter Stegen! Atletico wield their way into the penalty area as Griezmann sets up the ball outside the penalty area to shoot. it lands for Barrios to shoot and he sends it straight down the middle.
Molina’s cross from the right is cleared by Kounde. Atletico succeeds in retaining the possession.

Atletico Madrid’s Portuguese forward Joao Felix has been linked to a move to England club Manchester United amid a lack of playing time under Diego Simeone. He has registered just four league goals in 13 games this season.
The Blaugrana have been impenetrable at the back. The team has conceded just six goals so far, the best in La Liga. The return of Ronaldo Araujo is a bonus for Xavi’s team.

Barcelona will be without the services of Robert Lewandowski against Atletico Madrid. The striker will serve a three-match ban for a red card he received against Osasuna in November. Could be a costly miss for the Catalans.
PREVIEW
Barcelona coach Xavi urged his team to improve its finishing against Atletico Madrid on Sunday in La Liga, where it will be without top goal scorer Robert Lewandowski.
The Polish forward has 13 goals in the top flight but will miss the first of three matches suspended following a red card against Osasuna in November before the World Cup break.
Barcelona leads the league on goal difference ahead of Real Madrid, and can take an outright lead after the defending champion lost 2-1 to Villarreal on Saturday.
Atletico, fourth, has not been at its best this season but Xavi anticipated a tricky encounter.
“(Simeone’s) teams are defensively very well drilled,” said Xavi. “They’ve been changing systems and it’s hard to predict how his team will play. Atletico have virtually no defensive holes, we have to take advantage of our chances as we won’t have many.”
