The inaugural AIFF Super Cup received another critic in the form of Chennaiyin FC skipper Henrique Sereno, who has opted to give the competition a miss.
After leading his side to the Indian Super League title against Bengaluru FC last Saturday , Sereno was not present in Chennai the following day for the trophy celebrations with the rest of the squad. The 32-year-old, instead, had flown back to his native Portugal.

This wasn't the only occasion that the two-time ISL winner has expressed his reservations about the Super Cup.

"I must be honest, for me, the Super Cup doesn't have a meaning. They should have had it during the season, not one month after. The weather here (in India) is going to be too hot to play at 5.30 in the afternoon. It's going to be very difficult but the Federation (AIFF) wants that, so must do that," Sereno had said during the sidelines of a promotional event in February.
Chennaiyin will take on I-League side Aizawl FC on March 31 in the Round-of-16 of the Super Cup. The management will take a call on which six foreign players among the eight to retain in the squad.
When contacted the club maintained that it is yet to take a decision on finalising the squad for the Super Cup and will do so only by next week.
