Golf icon Jack Nicklaus said 14-time major champion Tiger Woods "looked very healthy" after a Ryder Cup dinner on Thursday.

Woods has rarely been sighted on the PGA Tour but he attended Nicklaus' dinner for US Ryder Cup hopefuls.

The 40-year-old Woods - whose agent denied reports his condition has deteriorated - has not played since the Wyndham Championship in August last year due to ongoing back problems.

But Nicklaus - the most successful golfer in history with 18 majors - was encouraged by what he saw at his North Palm Beach home.

"He looked very good," Nicklaus told reporters at The Honda Classic on Sunday. "He looked very healthy. And he really misses playing. So that's good.

"He says he was feeling great and he was able to stand over a putt and chip now without having any leg pain or so forth. We didn't really talk a whole lot about it ... He doesn't have a timetable for returning or anything.

"I think he's pretty private about what his situation is, and I don't blame him, because every time he opens his mouth, there's nothing but articles written about speculation about Tiger."
