It could stand the test of time

It is a special way to remember a record-breaking performance. Sri Lankan paceman Chaminda Vaas, who dismissed three Bangladesh batsmen off the first three balls, an unprecedented feat in an ODI, had a pleasant surprise waiting for him after a splendid day's work.
He was asked to plant a liquid-amber tree at the Peitermaritzburg Oval, to commemorate his record-breaking bowling performance. A plaque was also unveiled to mark Vaas's display after he bagged six wickets to star in Lanka's 10-wicket win in this pool `B' World Cup game. Actually, it has become customary for bowlers to plant a tree at this venue after a five-wicket haul, and the first known tree was planted by English legend Denis Compton in 1957. The late Malcolm Marshall, among the all-time greats, has left his signature here too. Vaas now joins an elite list.
