Pawan Singh selected as jury member for shooting sport at Paris Olympics

Pawan Singh, an official of the National Rifle Association of India, has been selected as one of the jury members for shooting sport at the Paris Olympic Games, beginning on July 26.

This will be Pawan’s second successive Games. He was selected for the same role for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 by the International Shooting Sport Federation.

He, along with three others, will be part of the RTS (Result, Timing, Score) jury members.

“It is going to be my second Olympics, and India will be sending their biggest shooting contingent. We will have 21 shooters competing for 27 medals at Paris, which is second after China,” he said.

Pawan and Oympic gold bronze-medallist shooter Gagan Narang are co-founder of Gun For Glory shooting Academy.

Blue Tigresses suffer narrow defeat in Myanmar friendly

The Indian senior women’s team suffered a 1-2 defeat to hosts Myanmar in the first of their two friendly matches at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.

In the first meeting between Myanmar and India after more than five years, the host scored both goals from set pieces. Tetsuro Uki’s side took the early lead courtesy of a header from Odisha FC’s Win Theingi Tun in the 14th minute.

Although her club teammate Pyari Xaxa equalised for India with an opportunistic tap-in in the 58th minute, San Thaw Thaw converted May Thet Mon Myint’s free-kick in the 74th minute to win the game for Myanmar.

Myanmar pushed into fourth gear right from kick-off and went on the hunt for an early goal. Indian custodian Elangbam Panthoi failed to get a touch on the Myanmar defender’s curling corner as Win Theingi Tun arrived unmarked and headed it into the empty net to put the hosts ahead.

Head coach Langam Chaoba Devi brought on Karishma Shirvoikar in place of Sandhiya Ranganathan. And the Kickstart forward’s fast pace paved the path for the equaliser in the 58th minute. Receiving the ball from Naorem Priyangka Devi on the left, Karishma burst forward and fired at the goal with her left foot. Myo Mya Mya Nyein attempted to catch it but ended up spilling it onto the path of Pyari Xaxa who dispatched it first time into the roof of the net to make it 1-1.

Myanmar got its second goal from another dead-ball situation in the 74th minute. A low free-kick from May Thet Mon Myint caught the Indian defence napping as San Thaw Thaw was able to slip away and meticulously jink it over an onrushing Panthoi.

Punjab FC signs Ninthoinganba Meetei and Nihal Sudeesh ahead of new season

Punjab FC has announced the signing of wingers Ninthoinganba (Ninthoi) Meetei and Nihal Sudeesh ahead of the upcoming 2024-25 season. Ninthoi, who last played for Chennaiyin FC signed with the club for three years until 2027 while Nihal has been signed from Kerala Blasters on loan for the season.

The 22-year-old Imphal-born Ninthoi was part of the U-17 Indian team that played in the 2017 U-17 FIFA World Cup hosted by India. He made his professional debut for Indian Arrows in the I-League, where he made 25 appearances scoring twice. He was signed by Indian Super League side NorthEast United in 2019. He made 24 appearances for the side before signing for Chennaiyin FC in 2021. He scored once in his 26 appearances across two seasons. Ninthoi was awarded the Most Valuable Player in the 2019 SAFF U-18 Championship.

Ninthoi will add value to the squad with his speed and youthfulness in the flanks which will be vital for the Club’s performance in their second season in the ISL.

The Kochi born Nihal was signed by Kerala Blasters in 2019 and played for their reserve side in I-League 2 ^nd Division. He later joined the Indian Navy in 2020 and quit the job after one year to rejoin Kerala Blasters in the 2022 season where he again played for the reserve side. The 23-year old made his ISL debut in the 2022-23 season for the Blasters and impressed with his performances.

Bengal Warriors Announce New Coaching Staff for Season 11 of PKL

The Bengal Warriors has announced Prashant Surve and Praveen Yadav, as head coach and assistant coach respectively for the upcoming Pro Kabaddi League season 11.

Earlier, the Warriors had also amicably parted ways with former Head Coach K Bhaskaran after the end of PKL 10.

Prashant has been part of the Bengal Warriors setup since PKL season 9 as the assistant coach and with his new promotion to head coach role he will look to build a competitive squad as he takes over from the veteran K Bhaskaran.

Meanwhile Praveen, a former kabaddi player himself is a new entrant to PKL and will be supporting Prashant, as both look to work together to develop a strong long-term squad.

The Kolkata based franchise has previously won the PKL title in 2019, which was season 7 of the tournament, and has qualified for the Playoffs on four occasions in the last decade. In Season 10, the Warriors narrowly missed out on qualifying for the Playoffs as it finished 7th, and kept the race for the knockout stages alive up until the final rounds of the league stage.

Nagal moves to second round of ATP Challenger in Germany

Second seed Sumit Nagal warmed up with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Felipe Alves of Brazil in the first round of the €148,625 Challenger tennis tournament on clay in Braunschweig, Germany, on Tuesday.

In the pre-quarterfinals, Sumit will play Pedro Cachin of Argentina.
