Manzi’s brace helps Malappuram blank Thrissur in Super League Kerala
Forty days after winning the opener in Kochi, Malappuram FC tasted its second win in the Super League Kerala with a 3-0 victory over Thrissur Magic FC at the Payyanad Stadium here on Friday night.
And just 10 minutes turned the match around with Malappuram’s Spanish striker Pedro Manzi scoring twice, the first with a nice header and the second with a penalty, and substitute Alex Sanchez adding another towards the end.
The match between the two teams which had a common home ground here and which were languishing at the bottom of the six-team league table – Malappuram and winless Thrissur were in the fifth and sixth rungs respectively – was a scrappy affair in the first half.
Both the teams created chances but the players often appeared confused once they entered the box. The Malappuram defence held the fort well and its goalkeeper Muhammed Sinan pulled off some fine saves.
After missing three or four chances, fumbling inside the box, Malappuram came up with some nice moves towards the end of the first half. It began with Faslu Rahman and Muhammed Jasim and moments later, Spaniard Joseba Beita sent a long pass into the box from the right to Brazilian Sergio Barboza.
Two men were virtually blocking his way and Barboza’s cross to Manzi bounced off a defender and rose high and the latter met it nicely and headed it home to give Malappuram the lead in the 44th minute.
Ten minutes later, Malappuram was awarded a penalty when Manzi was brought down by Thrissur defender Dany inside the box and the Spaniard sent the ball to the right corner neatly to make it 2-0.
Later, Alex Sanchez, who had entered in the 71st minute, went on a solo run, foxed the Thrissur goalkeeper Pratheesh and added to the goal tally.
A few minutes before that, a Thrissur attempt hit the bar and another try towards the end was nicely blocked by a Malappuram defender. With nine points, Malappuram is now level with Thiruvananthampuram Kombans but continues to stay in the fifth rung since the latter has a superior goal difference.
