Manish Mourya struck five goals to help Government Senior Secondary School, Pnadra Pani, Chhattisgarh to a 6-3 victory over Government Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya, Bankner, in a group-F league match of the Steelbird 41st Nehru sub-junior hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium on Monday.

Manish Vatti scored the other goal for the winner. Ritik Kumar (2) and Aryan found the target for the Delhi team.

MP, Jharkhand, Haryana, Odisha enter semifinals of Junior Women’s National Hockey Championship

Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Haryana and Odisha advanced to the semifinals of the Junior Women’s National Hockey Championship here on Monday.

Madhya Pradesh beat Uttar Pradesh 2-0 in the first match of the day. Captain Bhumiksha Sahu (17’, 38’) found the back of the net twice to ensure victory for MP, who will take on Odisha in the semifinal.

In the second quarterfinal, Jharkhand defeated Maharashtra 3-0 to set up a last four clash with Haryana. A spectacular hat-trick by Dungdung Sweety (2’, 19’, 31’) sealed a comfortable win for Jharkhand.

Haryana got the better of Punjab 3-1 in the third quarterfinal. Haryana built a two-goal lead after two quickfire goals from Pooja Malik (22’) and Khasa Shashi (24’).

Kaur Sukhveer (30’) reduced the margin for Punjab before Bhteri (59’) secured the win for Haryana with a strike in the dying moments of the game.

In the last quarterfinal, Odisha thrashed Chhattisgarh 5-1. Captain Lahare Mamteshwari (1’) put Chhattisgarh in lead at the start of the match but Tanuja Toppo (11’), Kujur Priyanka (20’), Kujur Rambha (29’, 33’) and Karuna Minz (32’) scored to turn the game in Odisha’s favour.

FOOTBALL

Goa thrashes Himachal 7-0 in Senior Women’s National Football Championship

Goa thrashed Himachal Pradesh 7-0 in a Group A match to secure its second consecutive win in the 29th Senior Women’s National Football Championship here on Monday.

Goa pumped in five goals before the breather. Striker Pearl Fernandes was the wrecker-in-chief with three goals to her credit. Aniela Barretto, Pushpa Parab, Sushmit Jadhav and Swellen Mercia Fernandes were the other scorers.

Goa, who had earlier beaten former champions Tamil Nadu, now have six points from two matches. Himachal suffered their second straight defeat in the competition.

In the day’s other match in Group A, Tamil Nadu beat Kerala 3-1 after leading 2-0 at half time. Both teams now have three points from two matches.

Kaviya Pakkirisamy opened the scoring for Tamil Nadu in the 40th minute, followed by a goal scored by K Santhiya. In the second session, Manasa K pulled one back for Kerala, but an own goal by Anjitha M widened the lead for Tamil Nadu.

Eighth seed Hruthik Katakam knocked out in National sub-junior championship first round

Ojas Mehlawat knocked out eighth seed Hruthik Katakam 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in the under-16 boys first round of the Fenesta National sub-junior tennis championship at the DLTA Complex on Monday.

Qualifier Aashravya Mehra, who had played the quarterfinals of the under-18 event last week, beat seventh seed Om Patel 6-2 6-2, in another first round encounter in a draw of 64.

Odisha lifers Harsabardhan Sahu and Jyoshna Sabar grab golds

Odisha lifers Harsabardhan Sahu and Jyoshna Sabar won the gold medals in youth competitions on the inaugural day of the National youth, junior and senior weightlifting championships here on Monday.

The results (youth, winners only): Men: 49kg: 1. Harsabardhan Sahu (Odi) snatch 85kg, clean and jerk 110kg, total 195kg; Women: 40kg: Jyoshna Sabar (Odi) 56kg, 64kg, 120kg.

Sufna Jasmin creates two National Records in Women’s 45kg

Sufna Jasmin of Kerala created National Records in the snatch and the total in the 45 kg Senior women section on the opening day of the IWLF National Youth, Junior and Senior Weightlifting Championships 2024-25 at Nagrota Bhawan, Himachal Pradesh on Monday.

The lifter from Kerala recorded a 76 kg lift in Snatch and 169 kg total to set the records.

Saika Ishaque to lead Bengal in Senior Women’s T20 meet

Saika Ishaque will lead Bengal in the Senior Women’s T20 Tournament beginning on October 17, it was announced on Monday.

Tanushree Sarkar has been named the vice captain. Probal Dutta is the head coach of the team, while India legend Jhulan Goswami is the mentor.
