The Indian faced a stiff resistance from World No. 20 Michelle Li in the second preliminary match. Sindhu rallied to beat the Canadian 9-21, 21-15, 21-17.
In the Round of 16, P.V. Sindhu beat Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu-ying 21-13, 21-15 to keep quarterfinal date with World No. 2 Wang Yihan.
Sindhu played one of the best matches of her career to stun the former World No. 1 Wang Yihan of China in straight sets (22-20, 21-19) and enter the semifinals.
Sindhu carried the confidence into the semifinal and defeated World No. 6 Nozomi Okuhara of Japan 21-19, 21-10 to become the first Indian badminton player to reach an Olympic final.
In the end, World No. 1 Carolina Marin proved to be a tough final hurdle for Sindhu. The Spaniard defeated the Indian 19-21, 21-12, 21-15 to take the gold medal.
